Need a decent media player - but haven't got admin rights.

As per title, really.

I have an IcyBox with all my music on, not loads of it but about 30Gb worth.
I want to be able to listen to this on my work laptop, but don't have admin rights to install iTunes etc, so am forced to use media player. I've just about had it with Media Player crashing on me, + I don't like the search/playlist functions.
Therefore I would like to use something else, but obviously has to be something that will install to a portable drive and run off that (like, for example, opera will).

can't you just copy the install directory of, for example, winamp to a memory card and run it without it having to actuially do anything to the registry?

otherwise maybe something simple like CDex? I'm sure there must be enough simple mp3 players that just unzip and run without any installing?

If you simply download Windows Media Player Classic, you can just run that and dont need to install it.
It's NOT good at organising multiple songs however....

Download from www.Doom9.org, or have a browse at other media players there.

You tend to get "Missing 5833HC84.dll - Re-installing the application may fix this problem" if you do that. iTunes needs Quicktime, which these laptops don't have.

My current media player plays stuff fine, I just can't create and organise nice playlists with it etc. I'll try winamp later though.

You may be able to copy the dll and simply dump it in the appropriate folder too, otherwise how about creating playlists at home with winamp, save them in a format WMP understands (playlists are typically pretty simple things you can edit in notepad iirc) then use those to organise?

I will second foobar and definitely recommend it (I use it all the time) although at first looks it doesn't seem as "pretty" as Winamp/WMP etc, but it is much more powerful.

@ Jamena - That isn't quite the issue, I don't *want* to use Media Player; it keeps crashing and some inbuilt features just don't get on with me. Cheers anyway. With the dll file - good idea, but access to Windows folder is blocked!

I'll let you know how I get on with foobar!

I'd second the recomentation for Media Player Classic. It has nothing to do with Windows Media Player, other than looking like WMP 6.4 from Win95 and Win2K days.

I would agree with Funkstar also, as MPC is great for general media playing (not just music) - I love the fact that it allows you to change codec settings etc like WMP 6.4 used to.

All you need is a player which doesn't store its settings in the windows registry and installs all it's files in one directory, like foobar2000 or winamp 2.81 or even vlc which will allow you to play video files too.

you tried installing while in safe (administrator )mode to get around the problem perhaps?
