problem with media center 2005 codecs

ok heres the problem i have installed windows media center 2005 and its fully updated i have got the nvideo purevideo decoder installed and the TV channels work flawlessly, but when i try a xvid or divx or any kind of avi video that is on my hard drive it just wont play!

So i thought it was just missing the codecs so i downloaded the xpcodedcpack and the avi's work but when i try to watch tv there is no sound so i uninstalled the codecpack and now i am back to square one my tv works ok but i cannot play videos on my harddrive.

please has any body got any solutions as this is really bugging me!

    thanks in advance!

just install one video-specific codec like ffdshow, rather than a never-bloody-works-right codec pack?
