    Setting up a web server.

I`ve been having hosting problems over the past week due to my hosting company breaking AUP with the data centre. Because of this I have been looking at setting up a web server.

I have bought a virtual machine from bytemark now But Im not sure where to begin when setting it up.

Basically they give you a clean install of debian os and thats it.

I initially want to host one of my domains there just to make sure It all works then eventually I want to transfer the other 7 domains I own.

Now to the reason for this post. I could do with an idiots guide to setting up a web/mail server. I`ve tried google before but cant seem to find anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can't give you a starters dummy guide - but you would want to start looking at debian's apt tools for packaging and installing applications. ie "apt-get install apache2" will install an apache2 server on your machine. apt-cache search <term> will search for terms in the list of applications that debian has. apt-get update will update the list of apps. Debian has different tools also for setting up and enabling new websites under apache.

I setup my apache2 by just googling a lot and also referencing the apache docs as well for setting up ssl with my own certificate.
