    In secure environment, you won't

    a) be patching your OS to violate the licensing terms
    b) be upgrading motherboards on machines whilst using Retail (i.e. not VLK) licenses

Really, i fail to see why people are getting worked up over this.

Foocorp releases Product 2.0, with snotty licensing terms. Either the product is worth the financial outlay and licensing peccadilloes, or it isn't. Whether the company and product are MS with Windows, or Gaussian Inc with G03, or whatever, doesn't change the very simple binary choice over whether a product is worth using or not.

If you don't like the new licensing terms in Vista, then you're saying Vista isn't worth the licensing woes, which means you don't want Vista, which means you should run something else.

    Simple, no?

Perhaps you *might* conceed that no everyone's 'secure environment' is quite the same - but then again..
    a) yes i will, and good luck proving i've violated my licence in the real world.
    b) yes i will - and far more than a motherboard, and far more than once a week. We don't ship our systems with VLK _ever_ - in fact, the only VLKs we have here are with our MSDN subscription.

Not all industry falls so neatly into your pre-prescribed shaped hole as you might think.. Simple, eh?

then talk to your software supplier (microsoft) not to me if you have a problem

i really can't understand what your problem is, though - don't like the license, don't use the software. why is that difficult?

And when you try to do it the second time it won't work anymore.

You're really obfuscating quite a lot of issues here.

We all know that Vista is going to become the de facto requirement for many things in the next couple of years. Want to run Halo3? Want to play Crysis with all the graphical goodies? Then you need to get Vista. There's a couple of obvious examples that will be of relevance to many on this forum.

It's very naive not to realise that we'll all be pushed into using Vista through some means or other over the next few years. Buy a new piece of hardware: oops, Vista drivers only; want to try out some new program: what, you don't have Vista? If the reality were indeed as simple as you claim, then a lot more people would be using Linux for free.

Despite my dissatisfaction with the RC builds I was seriously considering buying a retail Ultimate licence when it came out, on the basis that a retail licence covers you for as long as you want it to, so the (steep!) investment would be worthwhile. Now that I have learned that such a licence is basically worthless to anyone with any intent to upgrade, I won't be bothering. My RC keys will last until the middle of next year, and I find XP actually works better right now.

Beyond that, well all I can say is that if MS wants to keep honest people 'honest', it'll take the trouble to act honestly itself. Otherwise, it's just encouraging people to regard their actions as contrary to natural justice and thus breaking the social contract. And we all know that SPP is really just a competition for hackers.

    this is absolute loonecy.

I for one love my media box, i've even been doing some contracting on the site to make sure i can build my new Vista souped up box. But licenesing restrictions like this, okay i'm going to be using an MSDN copy most likely.

So i was thinking why are they doing this, most people buy their PC with the OS pre-loaded. Most people don't "upgrade" their motherboard. This is really really moronic, and is going to make me recomend that people like my parents happen to "aquire" a VL edition, and someones MSDN key.... can't think how that would happen. Really ****ing stupid restriction on a really great OS
