To extrapolate that logic, could you try a live CD such as Knoppix, and then if you have a FAT 32 partition (or a CDR) you could save the stuff from there?
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.
A quick google search found a suite of tools called hfsutils - but it is no longer supported and seems to be out of date. Best bet, as has been suggested, is to use a live CD of a linux distro, such as Knoppix, and use that to read the filkes you want and copy them to a FAT partition. (Knoppix will write to NTFS file systems, but I'm not sure how reliably. It will read HFS (Mac) but I don't think it will write to it.

Ok, thanks very much. I will give Knoppix a try
If you have problems with Knoppix you could try MacDrive for Windows. You can download the free trial version which gives you five days to use it.
I've used this before and it works great, gives you access to the drive as if it were a normal windows drive.
