Win XP Access denied

A friend of mine has farked up his comp, i think its got a virus or 10. Anyways i have tried plugging his hard drive into my spare system so i can run a virus scan on it (the virus disabled his norton) but i can only get access to certain directories. When i try to access his user directory it tells me access denied. He has no idea why *eedyat*, im thinking he has protected his files. either way is it possible to remove this protection as i need to get in there to back up his documents

If you have XP Pro & run as administrator then it can be done.
Something to do with permissions (I had to do this a while ago but I have forgotten the ins & outs) - a bit of googling should get you what you need.

right click on a folder, properties, security, advanced.

there should be the option to take permissions & reassign them to you

then you need to right click on the drive and go to sharing and permissions and under there somewhere i can't remember where is the option to take control of the permissions , then simlply edit them to allow what ever u need, then this should propogate down to all other files and folders as by default they are set to inherit permissions from the parent object

I cant find it there is no advanced security option the only other security option takes me to my shared documents. the option to make the drive/folders private is also greyed out.

Are you running Pro or Home?

You should be able to right click on the folder, and select - Properties, Security - and then assign yourself permssions from that window.

Got the same problem on an XP home machine that went t*ts up so I put XP Pro over the top in hope I could write the docs folders CD then format the machine and start over. Restore the backup.

However, access is denied on the docs folders... and yes, theres NO permissions options in the folder properties!

In order to get the "SECURITY" tab in the folder/drive properties you need to go to "Tools" ---> "Folder Options" and UNCHECK "use simple file sharing" at the bottom.

Once you do this, the security tab will appear in the folder properties window where you can add or remove priviledges and get access.

Umm, doesn't this security tab only show up on drives with an NTFS file system? If his drive isn't NTFS then you might not be able to do what they say above..

Sorry I didn't mention that the check box is already unchecked on this particular machine and yes its ntfs, the one next to it is working fine.

I think something has gone wrong updating it to Pro from Home.
