Is there anyway of getting around this, or is it an extreme flaw in MS Exchange?

or Nest your distribution lists ?

Yep, what Moby said. Basically you have lots of mini distribution lists, and make those members of the greater DLs.

It doesn't strike me as obvious? Maybe when you get into thousands of contacts, but 75?

Yep, for instance all the branch offices at my company have a DL, the DLs are all a member of the All Staff DL, for when global emails are sent out.
