    Knee problem

Just got of a skype call to the 'bairn' who is 'over the pond 'at the moment . He told me he was away to see the doc today as he is having a bit of a knee problem while doing his running . He says that after about 10 minutes running he get an 'excruciating pain in his knee area. It disappears when he stops running and rests a bit. He does a lot of hill walking and ski-snowboarding thingies and has no problems with them . The american doc was suggesting that he maybe gave up running ( which I thought seemed to be a sensible idea ) but bairn did not seem very pleased about. Anyway the doc is referring him to a specialist and he may need an op . I was wondering if there are any runners in here who have experienced the same symptoms. I am a bit concerned about him having an op as I had a knee prob about ten years ago - torn the knee ligaments and while they took about 6 months to heal - they never realy healed properly and 10 years later have come back to haunt me.

Not a runner, but ex rugby and astro hockey player, was warned, no actaully told by my doctor to give up both sports immediately about 8 years ago.

I can't cope with slopes at all, with serious pain on the outside of the ligaments in both knees. In all honesty the docs said i had a serious compression problem. If its cold I struggle to walk in comfort. If I have played golf the day before I can't walk down stairs in the morning properly.

I have to have surgery on both knees, but the thought of having them done scares the crap out of me.

as it is I need to cope with clicking knees till I get them sorted, its kinda gross watching the ligaments click over the knee cap when you go upstairs and down slopes lol

Thanks for reply . Yes , I know how you feel . knee ops are always tricky affairs. I,m sure that 'the kid' could get an op but I would prefer him to wait till he was back in this country before getting it done . I was about 47 when I torn my liaments and was off work for about six months. That was ok for me but I would not like it to affect his career as it could possibly do ,as he is progressing so well at the moment.

knees suck. luckily I have only had minor tears of the ligaments in my knee (MCL and LCL at different times as well as the coronary ligaments). Just alot of private physio sessions and a few months off training

Indeed knee's suck, I hurt mine 12 years ago playing rugby and its never been right since. I've had to operations on it, but its not helped.

I went back for another mri a few months back to be told I have arthritis in it as well now.

They are always very hard to fix, but I hope this isn't the case for you.

    Has he seen a physio?

I had a similar thing around christmas, sharp pain in my right knee while running. Only started after about 20 mins and wasn't as bad if I slowed to a walk, but put the speed back up and it hurt again.

Physio diagnosed it as a "mud twist", had got it from only running on treadmills as the belt can cause you to twist if you're pushing yourself.

I'd basically damaged some fine "feather-like" tendons I think at the point where the top and top and bottom halves of the kneecap join. Took me about a month of self massage to re-damage and re-heal the area.

Not saying it's the same thing, but I always go to the physio as my first stop with anything like this.

Well some light, bairn went to a specialist knee clinic and had some x-rays. No bone damage but has been diagnosed with ' iliotibial band syndrome ' which according to this link is treatable '

As we get older, all the sports and or injuries of the past show in our knees. I was a big cyclist for many years riding competitive with the club. At 42 I developed a torn meniscus and had laproscopic surgery. It is VERY common in the U.S to have lapro to clean and smooth the joint of the knee. I swear by glucosimine supplements. They work in getting lubracation to the joint. My knee feels it if I'm off them for any time. They will take about a month to work as they have to build up in the system. You really should have the doctor look at your knees and get the surgery if he says you need it. Being proactive now may save you a knee replacement down the road

    Re: Knee problem

^Another vote for glucosamine, it really does help. Obviously it's not going to cure any underlying chronic conditions but anything that eases it is going to be welcome. Otherwise, to echo the above, never neglect the knees and seek medical advice as soon as you are able.

    Re: Knee problem

Will have to try glucosamine, my knee is still giving me jip after 4 months of stretching the muscle fibres when my kneecap was trying to come out...

    Re: Knee problem

My knees are totally screwed. and I'm not even 20 yet.

Have had no weights on my knees for 4 weeks now and have not run for 2 weeks, but they are still quite painful when I bend down or bend them at a 90 degree angle, left one has developed some kind of lump and the pain when touched is quite painful, I will seriously go to the Doctor this week if it is still there on Wednesday.

My knees are screwed from running when I was 18 stone+
