I prefer mudguards on it to be honest, beats getting a wet bum or covered in mud when you're on the trail. It's a bit better for anyone following you on a trail too, nothing worse than getting leathered by muck from someone in front.
The trail lights have since been removed for the moment since I wasn't happy with them. RMA'd them for checking over since when using both lamps the battery warning light would come on straight away.
the other problem with the crud catcher is that when you turn the wheel.. you get covered in crap - the shock blade turns with the wheel - it doesn't stop everything, but it makes a hell of a difference

I may be getting one of those as an insurance replacement for my stolen hardrock (will be the 0.0/0.5 depending on how far i can push them) what's the frame ride like?
If im not very much mistaken the lamps are made by blackburn.
With regard to mudguards, ive got a Flinger DH one that i got from wiggle 3 years ago nearly, they dont sell it anymore, but it bears a striking resemblance to this:
Club Roost Force Field Fender Mudguards 7.99 GBP Free P & P to UK & Ireland, Cheap International Rates. Next day delivery from Europes Largest Online Bikeshop.
Mine's black though. Riding buddies experience is that DH guards are generally better, theyre wider, and tend to be far more robust, plus they look better.
you can also get these if you want everythign to match, but theyre a bit weird as it only sticks out the front:
Crud Fender Moto-X Mudguards 4.99 GBP Free P & P to UK & Ireland, Cheap International Rates. Next day delivery from Europes Largest Online Bikeshop.

Darklink do you know how much your avalanche weighs, with pedals and tyres (i.e. complete bike)?
I've got the mid-range halfords version, but am just at the point where I am starting to think about weight when replacing/upgrading bits. Be handy to get a benchmark
@herulach, yep it's a good frame; very rigid with OK mud clearance, not especially light but should be lighter than your lardrock, only thing is it has quite a compact upright position which you may or may not like. I like the position, but same as any bike you need to try it to see if it's for you.
