    Sports Personality of the YEAR

    Giggs? Year? What a Joke!

    That is all.

Totally agree! My pick wasn't even short listed. Then again, looking at the so called "experts" that select the 10 athletes it doesn't surprise me.

I hoped Button would have clinched it. Giggs should have got the lifetime award IMHO.

Re: Sports Personality of the YEAR

He won the player of the season award for his contribution to the team over the first 5 months of this year, and then has performed excellently again throughout the first three months of this season as well. Fully deserved in my eyes.

That really doesn't sound particularly special compared to what some other athletes have achieved this year.

They have done the exact same thing Giggs has done, took part in something they enjoy doing, the only difference is the athletes with medals when they get bronze, silver or gold at an event, while in football the awards dont usually come until the end of the season.

Look at the age of Giggs, look at how many people both young and old, respect and look up to Giggs, that is why he deserved sports personailty of the year just as much as anyone else.

I wasn't covering his achievements, I was saying that I don't see why the "year" is so relevant.

The reason he won it is because he's now the most decorated player in English football history, and is a major part of the the best team in the country and one of the best in Europe at the age of 36 - fairly unprecedented for a forward - and is still renowned for his attitude and contribution to areas outside the game.

So yes, I think it does sound fairly special.

But there's a life team achievement award for that and I'd be all for him getting that award instead.

Don't know about that, he's really hit his peak in the last 18 months. It's certainly far overshadowed the rest of his career in my opinion, in terms of performance over the course of the entire year.

I think the main opposition to him winning is because he's a member of a team rather than an individual to be honest - and the fact that a whole load of people have no respect for footballers.
