    Remember kids... wear your helmet!

Had an off on my mountain bike today, coming down some steep singletrack covered in leaves and hit a tree stump at the side of the track. I got launched straight over the bars and landed a couple of meters away on my head, destroyed my helmet but my head managed to get away with just a little graze on my forehead (shoulder isn't feeling too good right now though!).

Here's some pics of the damage to my helmet, glad it's not my head that took this beating!

I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.

indeed.... makes my urine boil seeing parents out with their kids on bikes, and none of them with helmets on - they're meant to cave in just like a real head too, so the helmet absorbs the energy of the crash, instead of your fragile little skull.

Yeah, I'd never ride off road without one, was probably about time I got a new helmet anyway, that one was about 8 years old.

Must've landed pretty heavily on it, took a fair bit of skin off the top but the main issue is the constant aching pain running from my shoulder up to the back of my neck, it's not too bad and I can still use my arm OK, just irritating since it doesn't go away when I sit down and stop moving like a cut would. Should feel better after a couple of days rest though.

dude from that mate you should seriously consider a full face helmet.
I never go out without mine on and the missus is the same. My missus was taken off by a car on thursday and the chin guard on her helmet was the first thing to hit the floor if she hadn't had it on she'd have no teeth now instead she has a small cut on her chin were the helmet jarred up.

The shoulder isn't much to look at since it's not that deep more a friction burn, the track I fell on was hard packed dirt covered in leaves so didn't rip the skin off like rocks/gravel/etc. Although, on this topic take a look at this thread on bike radar, pretty brutal, I'd advise not clicking it if you're squeamish! http://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/forums/...php?t=12683558

I have thought about it but I mostly ride cross country, today's ride was 15 miles but would've been about 25 miles had I not cut it short after the crash! Don't fancy carrying around a full face for that distance, especially in the summer.

Yeah a helmet has saved me in a similar fashion before to. But sometimes it feels like it makes certain falls worse on the neck, swings and roundabouts i guess.

Re: Remember kids... wear your helmet!

I've been into my running lately rather than cycling (but meaning to get back on my bike soon).
A helmet is on my list to get but after seeing that pic will be getting one before I head out again!!!
Glad the helmet took the brunt of it for you!

Funnily enough, I also have a MET helmet, though I don't do MTBing, it's road for me. Luckily my helmet's in better shape than that and I've only ever had one crash/fall.
