cheap running watch that can tell me my total distance I ran ?

Second-hand smartphone would probably be the best bet

perhaps an orange san fran would be a good choice and with an app like runkeeper (i use) you have your self a fully fledged GPS distance/cal/speed/ interval trainer

I had not great experiences with my iphone GPS either, I run figure-8 loops at lunch and it kept having me cutting the corner(s). Probably fine on a straighter route though

think it depends on the phone. I do a lot of trail running (ie very twisty) with friends, and we're all using Endomondo, on different phones - iphone, blackberry, HTC, I'm using a Nokia N8. Very common to see different distances recorded, unfortunately, but good enough average.

I use Endomondo on my iPhone, but used to use Nokia Sportracker before I got suckered in by the Apple marketing machine. Both were pretty easy to use, seemed relatively reliable (as long as you're not doing short, repetitive circuits) and were free (once you have the required phone).
