VAT on Supplements

I see the government has decided to put VAT on Sports Supplements. So stuff which helps people become healthy and achieve good sporting goals is now more expensive. So instead of trying to promote healthy living and lifestyle, they put a tax on it. Great.

I guess it depends on your view of supplements really.

Massive drums of protein shake for example aren't a necessary part of a healthy lifestyle. you could even argue about them being unhealthy really.

edit There is also a lot of research to suggest that simple vitamin supplements don't work and are pretty much pointless.

Wasn't there a documentary on sports drinks done recently which proved they have hardly any effect? Everything in moderation, and supplements shouldn't supplement a balanced proper diet.

A couple of friends moaned about this the other day, but it's not like they're needed for a healthy diet in any way whatsoever.
Only 'helpful' to those who really work out etc, and even then I know people who are 'big' without them so I don't think it really matters :/

I personally don't think there should be VAT charged on them.

The argument surrounding this action however spins off into so many arguments for different reasons it's untrue!

I do use supplements, but for just that. I supplement things I couldn't finance otherwise and to make sure I get all my vitamins etc. I have friends who think it's okay to practically live off these macho powders and super turbo gainers. I suppose they're non-essential supplements. So the argument that they're putting VAT on stuff geared towards a healthy lifestyle may not apply there?

I don't know, one way or another my bank account is increasingly difficult to keep out of the red aha!
