The end is near... (football relegation talk)
So with the premier league drawing to a close the winners are nearly decided. But what about the other end?
What are peoples predictions on teams being relegated?
It looks to me like it'll be Burnley and QPR and one of Hull, Newcastle or Sunderland.
Hull only have 3 games and are only 1 point out of the relegation zone. They have a decent goal difference but probably the second hardest end of season.
Newcastle just look unable to accrue points. There fate is in other peoples hands. They have the easiest run in, in my opinion but lack any obvious ability to move up the table.
Sunderland (sigh...) Have probably got the hardest end of season. Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal away. The last home game of the season is against Liecster is a must win and I don't think they can. The only advantage they have is a game in hand and current increase in form. Its not a lot. Especially as they look close to having there best player jailed!
What are peoples thoughts?
( for full disclosure, I'm a Sunderland fan so please be nice with your words )

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
I'm a Toon fan... I don't like our chances. We have no defenders left in the squad after those embarrassing challenges in the Leicester game and letting our reserve players go out in January.
We have no proven goal scorers and haven't had any for some time, so we cant even rely on a few goals to keep us going. Now, to top it all off, Carver has clearly lost the entire dressing room!
We aren't getting any more points, so as you say, our fate is in others hands.
Its been one of the worst seasons I have ever seen Newcastle endure. We have topped the physio room injury list for almost the whole campaign, our summer transfers were a complete flop and then we got rid of our manager and appointed a care taker with zero experience. I called the fact we would be in a relegation battle the moment Pardew was approached by Palace, not because I feel he could have done much better but because I knew EXACTLY who the only alternative that Ashley would... correction... wouldn't cough up for would be.
Ashley has been gambling with the chance of suitable success for far too long, now it could very well take an £80mil bite out of his fat arse. We actually deserve to go down in my opinion, we aren't being run like a football club and the only thing I really worry is that this penny pinching Sports Direct mentality behind the club management will force us into a continued freefall.
As for Sunderland, as much as it pains me to admit it, you have fight and passion. I honestly think your players, whilst they don't have the quality that a premier league club should expect, have the drive to fight for their life. I predict that you guys will park the bus and get enough draws, the same as you have been managing for most of the season!
Hull face Burnley at home, who have basically nothing to fight for, so I think they will pick up the three points necessary to escape relegation.
Aston Villa are another one who are technically in the battle, but with Benteke back in form and the team getting results, I think they will also be fine.
-
Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
I'm under the impression Ashley has turned NUFC into a selling club in order to recoup all the loans he has invested into the club. The post match interview after the game where he accused the defender of getting deliberately sent off appears to be the breaking point.
I don't want Burnley to be relegated; the underdog thing. But they will. Other 2; not sure. I think Sunderland and Newcastle will make it. The thing is both them and hull have been in the EPL long enough to not be in this situation.
My nearest EPL team next year is Bournemouth!

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
Leicester have had a good run. Hope it continues. Sorry to the Newcastle fan, but so relieved to see that win. They face Southampton (home) Sunderland (away) and QPR (home). As Lineker points out on the BBC today, if Leicester maintain their current form they should stay up. Particularly when others in the drop zone have much tougher opponents.
With the exception of chelsea the other 3 in the top 4 are still going for it to try and secure a top 3 finish (and the easier CL run up that goes with it). A lot will depend on Arsenal v United. If United win that then Arsenal will have to play hard in their last 2 matches, as will United. Arsenal have Sunderland and then West Brom. United have Hull. Sunderland will therefore face a tough match as Arsenal will be looking to win it. United will want to beat Hull but it might be moot by then, but if they did lose to Arsenal and Liverpool/Tottenham win their matches, even then United might need to beat Hull to keep their CL spot. I don't think the bottom end will get an easy time from the top end with the possible exception of Sunderland's last game against Chelsea. I wonder if Newcastle will end up going down by virtue of Sunderland beating Chelsea following a fielding of the Chelsea reserves and youngsters.
QPR look likely to lose to Man City, probably beat Newcastle, taking them to 30, which makes their match against Leicester a big match (unless the others they are chasing have already got enough to make 33 insufficient), and with Sunderland only needing 1pt from 4 games (albeit all tough ones) to get to 34 it looks likely QPR will go down, unless they can produce something special against Man City.
Hull will probably beat Burnley (though not necessarily). If they do then Leicester's match with Sunderland becomes much more important, and potentially Leicester's match against QPR too. QPR will probably be relegated come what may by then, but playing for pride - and with the chance to sink another team alongside them. Could be quite a match if it comes to that!
Poor Villa however, no chance for a cheeky rest of players in the last match ahead of a cup final. If Leicester and Hull both win their next matches Villa will have to keep up their effort to the end to avoid a last minute calamity. So will Newcastle, but based on current form...
tbh given recent forms I hope Leicester stay up and Newcastle mop-up the 3rd relegation place with QPR and Burnley. Plus it would mean we don't have to see shots of Mike Ashley on MOTD for a while, which would be nice.

Williamson has been hands down the worst centre back in the EPL this season. He was never premiership quality anyway.
That does seem to be Ashley's plan, although none of the debt has actually been paid off yet and we aren't even very good at it. They don't seem to sell on any of the deadwood, just the profit makers. We are now left with a squad full of deadwood. Its depressing.

33 points wouldn't be sufficient, as that's what Sunderland currently sit on. They need 35 minimum (so 36 really, as there is only 3 games remaining) to be realistically in with a chance of escaping due to the goal difference Leicester and hull currently have.

I agree - for QPR to have a chance a lot of teams need to lose while QPR win. I was trying to say that I think the best QPR can hope for is 33 (and they might not even manage that) so fairly likely they will be relegated given Sunderland already have 33. If Sunderland get 1 more point and QPR lose to Man City (likely) then it's a done deal.

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
Moved up to Leicester last year and am really enjoying the communal optimism generated for Leicester's chances of staying up.
I didn't think that they would do it, but they only need one more win, who knows.
Was looking forward to Brighton playing them in the Championship next season, so personally I am happy whatever happens.
I think that the way the ungrateful Newcastle fans have behaved towards Pardew and Ashley means that they deserve to have a Championship team - perhaps it will help to go towards stopping them telling southerners that they hate cockneys - implying that the southern accent owning person is thought to be a cockney - never even been to Bow :)

The fans are ungrateful? 50000 people turn up to that stadium at every home game. The away stand at every away game is always full. People in Newcastle... actually ill correct that, people in the North East are passionate about football like nowhere else in the country despite the fact that our Trophy cabinets are tethering dust.
The management changed the name of the stadium, move the Statue of Sir Bobby, sell our best players, get us sponsorship deal from one of the most heinous companies in the country, don't reinvest profits but also doesn't pay off debt to the owner...
All football clubs would be nothing without the fans and they are the ones who should be treated with respect. The management earn the respect of the fans by showing ambition and not gambling the fortunes of the club and the spirit of the supporters on deliberate mediocrity.
I appreciate the comments about cockneys might get your back up, but how many Southerners can tell the difference between Northern accents from similar regions? I lived just outside the M25 for 4 years and I know what the typical attitude towards people from above Watford is like.
You are talking about mostly working class folk whose entire life has revolved around that club since they day they were born. So far the club has given them next to nothing back since Ashley took over.
The club deserve to go down, but that's because its being run like a bargain basement factory outlet, not because the fans protest against such behaviour.
In slightly more positive news for the Toon, Cisse is back and he does have a habit of scoring lucky goals. Perhaps him and Siem can just about pull us through.

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
Villa fan here, one more win and I think were safe.
As for going down, Burnley, Hull and Newcastle I think. Squeaky bum time at St James's!

I think that's right, i can fully understand the animosity towards Ashley. But i do think the animosity towards Pardew was unfounded.
If they were nicer towards Pardew, they'd still have a proper manager. Carver is out of his depth and i don't think he's helping the situation.
I'd hate to see Newcastle go down. (Not a Newcastle fan btw ;-) )

did anyone see the news today with Carver saying he's the best manager in the league?!

I'm in two minds about this really. I totally agree Carver is out of his depth but if you look at the options he has available to him, and if you look at what happened at the end of last season under Pardew, there is no real evidence to suggest the results would have been any different.
Lets also remember he wasn't sacked or pushed out, he was actually sold to Palace for 3mil IIRC!
The biggest factor in the whole debacle that is often overlooked is that he has history at Palace from his playing days. I'm sure other things attributed to his decision such as:
- He didn't have enough input into transfers
- There was to be no transfers by Newcastle in January
- He didn't feel confident with the players that were there
- The fans didn't rate him which made his day to day living arrangements uncomfortable
All of the above is basically irrelevant though, because he did leave of his own accord and with the blessing of management. The only real mistake that was made was gambling with the notion John Carver was good enough to bring in enough points for us to be safe. There are plenty of managers who could have been brought in on a caretaker contract who have the experience to do good enough, but the bank of Ashley said no...

I did... the guy is totally deluded for sure, but if you watch the whole video its quite clear that he is trying to get across that he has to have a winning mentality and the press/social media have somewhat taken it out of context.

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
I think general elections should be made to be held after the end of the season. This sort of news might affect teams mental psychology and detrimentally impair performance. I mean with all those party leaders resigning due to a landslide series of losses, you've got to wonder what certain teams' managers (and the players under them) might be thinking right now. ;)

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
Is it worth bringing up the issue of disgraceful refereeing this season?
There has been some bloody woeful decisions this year. I wouldn't be surprised if the relegation spots are finalised by referee cock-ups, would really summarise the EPL this year.
-
Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
So those of us with orange/yellow in our kits are doomed?
At least Hull had the decency to return three non-Tory MPs ;)
As a lifelong Tigers fan (I remember the days of being bottom of the 4th Division and £1m in debt....), I have to say that if we don't beat Burnley tomorrow we're stuck with relying on others to go down rather than ourselves to stay up: can't see us getting anything from Tottenham or Man U. Also have to say I almost choked on my coffee at "... them and hull have been in the EPL long enough to not be in this situation." - this is only our, what, fourth or fifth season in the top flight? Never been there prior to 2008. I'm pretty sure we're not used to the rarified atmosphere yet....

A friend claimed they fell over the line into automatic promotion. I agree - over the corpse of my club which collapsed just short of the play offs :(

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
I told you Sunderland would be up for it.... I hate you :p
Well we scraped a point, but more importantly, we played pretty decent football. Even more importaintly, Burnley bloody won! Fantastic spirit from them to keep on fighting.
Now our fate is in the Hands of Manchester UTD and Spurs beating Hull. Both better teams, both fighting for position so I have a shred of hope.

I think we may have used up two season worth of luck these last two games though!
I think it's more than likely that Hull are going down now. But you never know. A lot of teams are still in the 'danger zone'.

gutted to see Newcastle get a point. poor Burnley. ruined the end to their season that. I should clarify that's noting against Newcastle or its fans, purely disgruntlement with the ownership and problems that's brought.

As I said in a previous post, poor refereeing will be a deciding factor! Win is a win at the end of the day. Can't deny the fact that your players wanted it despite being dominated statistically.

It is a shame to see Burnley go straight down, but they didn't even attempt to do what's necessary to compete in the Prem. They have a fantastic manager and fantastic fans, but the harsh reality is they actually deserve to go down also. The premiership is one of the most, if not the most competitive leagues in the world, with that comes a necessity to invest to succeed and they just didn't do that.
I'm sure I'll end up in some rather heated discussions about this with my brothers girlfriend, as he is a pretty loyal Burnley fan.

Depending how this weekend's matches go everything could be decided. If I had to choose one to watch it would be Leicester - Sunderland. Two well performing sides who both still have the desire, and need, to win.
-
Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
Southampton 1 - 0 Aston Villa
Burnley 2 - 0 Stoke (irrelavant I know)
QPR 1 - 1 Newcastle
Sunderland 0 - 1 Leicester (Ulloa 23')
Tottenham 3 - 2 Hull
Come on you Foxes!
-
Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
I can see a lot more goals in Sunderland - Leicester, but which way the match will go I'm not sure. And I think Newcastle will beat QPR - much to my dismay. Newcastle 3 - QPR 1 is my prediction. I think Hull-Spurs will be a 1-0 tedium, possibly 0-0
-
Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
Southampton 2 - 0 Aston Villa
Burnley 0 - 0 Stoke
QPR 1 - 1 Newcastle
Sunderland 2 - 1 Leicester (And I reckon Graham will start it off with his second Sunderland goal)
Tottenham 1 - 1 Hull
I'm rubbish at these things though. Always getting the worst score on these at work.
Just as long as Sunderland win and Hull don't, it's a good weekend for me.
-
Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
Its impossible to call Sunderland at the moment, its like they have a bloody guardian angel. If I was to take a guess, I would say their luck has run out and Leicester will continue their excellent form however this is an away game for them and the Sunderland fans are going to be there to make an atmosphere I think.
Southampton will lose to Villa. They are in a slump, the players have probably agreed terms with other clubs behind closed doors... their season is over. Villa have been really impressive recently, Sherwood is having a real impact, but this is away so there wont be the same fan noise to drive them along. Dont see this being much of a game.
I would be surprised if Burnley still had the fight to beat Stoke, who have been relatively consistent this season but I would like to see it.
Tottenham.... please please please beat Hull. I think they will, Hull just seem to have nothing at the moment but Tottenham just dont seem to be firing at the moment.
As for Newcastle, its difficult to call. Everyone in the league seems to hate Newcastle though so I wouldn't be surprised if QPR turned up for the game purely out of bitterness. Does look like we have some fight in us though, Colloccini needs to turn up in a big way.
All in all, MOTD should be good!

Quiet happy to see the QPR result ;) but it doesn't really help us. Glad Hull lost.
Kind of a shame there was no goals in our game, I would've had money on at least 2 goals in the game. Shame we couldn't have kept Leicester in the fight for longer ;)

tbh, we've never really recovered from that chunk of the season where half the first team were injured at once. Disappointing, but it's not like we've got huge Premiership pedigree - if we go down this year we'll deserve it, if we stay up we won't. Although the best possible result for my household is two losses for Sunderland and wins for Newcastle and Hull (the wife's a born-and-bred geordie)! Really don't expect to get that though.

Well, the Mackems have got a couple of tough matches, but I really don't fancy us to beat Man Utd, even at home.
That said, they'll probably have nothing to play for - there's every chance their 4th place will be confirmed tomorrow (and if it isn't the Mackems will be safe anyway :( ). A Hull team fighting for their life against a Man Utd playing an effectively dead rubber for them ... I'll clutch every straw I can get right now ;)

Keep clutching buddy. Tomorrow night you will witness Sunderland park the bus and nail the 1 point required for survival. Then you and the Toon can scrap it out.

That bus is being well and truly parked by the sound of it. Lovely quote from the BBC webpage...

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
Arsenal have been utterly disappointing throughout this season, with only Sanchez making their games bare-able to watch and that kind of sums it up really.
What made me really laugh is that Newcastle released the 2015-16 kit... and it has an out of date Wonga logo on it. If you ever need evidence of a club being run on minimal investment... there it bloody is.

Haven't really been watching but I've always felt Arsenal are inclined to try and pass it into the opponents net. That didn't really work last night (that happens when you have 10 men back the entire game) and to be honest, I think we deserve all credit. There was a few wobbles, but generally speaking we kept them 25-ish yards out, waited for a striker to get annoyed and hoof and lit Pants catch it and hoof it up the pitch. And we did that for 90 minutes.
It was messy, it was scrappy, O'Shea, Pants and Coates had a great game. If I'm being honest I was thinking we could nick this, as Arsenal just didn't see us as able to attack for the first 60 minutes, then in the space of a few minutes, Fletcher had to goes and Van Aanholt had a shot (sadly with his weak foot).
Now, it's all on you Newcastle. You can decide your future.
Another interesting question is, who will be managing Sunderland come next season. I would like Dick, but I don't think his wife will let him. We need someone tried and tested, and not some risky new blood.

That's traditionally the football they play, but this season it hasn't worked and they have been found out way too many times. They are light years away from their best days which does make me a little disappointed because they have always been one of the crown jewels in English football. Now they seem to get that champions league position based on individual performances from one or two players in the squad. Given the money they spend, they should be fighting for the title every year.
Starting to wonder if Wengar has passed his peak or if perhaps the game has changed around him and he doesn't know how to deal with it.
I'm not sure who you guys should pick for the next coach either, but you definitely need to get out of this routine of plummeting down the table and sacking the manager in the last stint of the season so that the impact of a new manager carries you through till the next year. I actually thought Gus was alright, if he had had a bit more investment in the summer, perhaps he would have been alright.

I agree, with a bit more money perhaps we wouldn't have ended up with Bridcutt and Buckley (read, rubbish defensive midfielder and rubbish winger) and perhaps we could have brought in Van Dijk and someone else with a bit more flair. And then we wouldn't have had to waste a loan on Coates (who under Poyet was just shocking IMO) and perhaps we could have loaned Borini again.
Either way, I don't think Poyet ever played positively enough. Perhaps I just enjoyed the feeling of not getting beat week in, week out but upon reflection we were a very boring, negative team. He wanted to play passing football, beautiful football, when we are basically a route 1 team.
Ah well. Pick ourselves up and dust ourselves down for the Chelsea match and then we can worry about these kinds of issues. I think Dick would be good to have but I don't think he will stay.

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
And so the day of reckoning... let's see what happens.
Predictions, Utd hammer Hull by a 3 goal margin while Newcastle draw 0-0 with West Ham. Hull go down.

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
I have to disagree with you there. I think for the first time in ages we actually made our own luck and outplayed the opposition... Just want to know why its taken us so long to do it.
John Carver still thinks he's good enough for the job, this really worries me. Guy is utterly deluded and the club keep backing him, he needs to go while a new coach will have time to settle. I wouldn't even have him on staff.
Jonás Gutiérrez is an incredible success story though. Goes out on loan, gets cancer, beats it, gets back in the squad, assists first survival goal then gets the second himself. What a legend.

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
Watching match of the day, hull were unlucky to lose.
Bit of a sign of what Manchester UTD have without de Gea

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
I actually watched the toon game with my mate who is a toon fan.........to say HE was tense was an understatement!
Amazing how they played considering their recent form and I don't think I've seen a manager look so happy at their team scoring a goal.....you'd have thought it was a Champions League winner :) (John "I'm the best coach in the EPL" Carver probably thought it was a CL winner he is so deluded)
Those 2 early disallowed goals for Hull were a scare, amazed they didn't actually put one away in the end.
Taking the scope beyond the EPL, I think it was just a shame that the 3 main deciders (and what should have been some of the tenses games this season) at the weekend (NewC vs WHam, PSE vs Swin and Boro vs Nor) were all 1-way games....no taking it to the wire for us neutrals :(

As a neutral I thoroughly enjoyed the newsfeed of the Arsenal, Stoke and Leicester games. Was wishing Hull to get a few in the net, but thanks to West Ham's usual throwing in of the towel it was moot anyway. My mate's a west ham fan and the way he put it was "You can always rely on west ham for a half-baked effort at the end of the season. Unless they're playing a big team like Man utd/fighting for their own survival they don't seem to give it 100%." And he pays to watch them!

I think you mean, thanks to Newcastle actually performing well for once... if you are going to claim to be a Neutral you could at least pretend to be one.

I think we can all see the true bias here Biscuit ;). But I do agree with you, you deserved this win. What you didn't deserve is be scrapping around on survival sunday. Leave that to the truly poor teams (a la Sunderland), you're just not cut out for it. You didn't even concede!
Now onto an equally interesting (if slower paced) part of the footballing calendar. The dance of the managers. Will be interested to see who ends up where. I hope we manager to secure Dick because he brings a lot to the table. He's also apparently already handed his request for players to Lee Congerton, which is a very good sign IMO!

Hey, I'm not pretending to be a neutral!
Shifting the focus from Newcastle's good performance (one of a handful we've had this season) by accusing West Ham of throwing in the towel is obviously inflammatory and not a fair representation of what happened. You might not like Newcastle for whatever reason, but the reality is West Ham were outplayed by a team who FINALLY fought for their survival.

That is a strong sign of ambition. You guys are in the same position as us really, management need to put their money where their mouth is and actually invest. I'm sure the past few years have filled you with the same kind of cynicism that I have though!
Quite few interesting clubs chopping and changing managers in the summer though:
Newcastle
Sunderland
Derby
West Ham
Real Madrid
Watford
Borussia Dortmund
Quite a few German teams
Perhaps Liverpool?
I really hope we don't end up with someone like McLaren, just stinks of same old 'safe' mediocrity. I would like to see us take a chance with a young ambitious talent or one of the many foreign coaches that seem to be on the market.
Manager of the season for me probably goes to Garry Monk. Swansea have been excellent under his leadership, even after selling their star striker.
Here is another couple of questions for everyone, out of the clubs going down, who do you think we come back up?
Out of the clubs coming up, who do you think will go straight back down?

I believe Burnley invested (very wisely) in there infrastructure rather than players this year so they are prime candidates to come bouncing back up. I feel Hull will really struggle, they spent big and it hasn't paid off for them. And I just don't think QPR were cut out for the premier league and I don't think we will see them in the top flight any time soon.
Regarding people coming up, it really depends summer transfers, they can genuinely make or break a team. Especially with Watford apparently about to lose there manager, which is confusing. But I haven't paid enough attention to the championship this year to have a full opinion.

Agreed. I just want a manager to get given a 4 year contract so he can put a team together that works and isn't basically redesigned every 12 months. God knows we have a lot of chaff to get rid of! Underneath a buffer of rubbish we actually have a semi-decent skeleton squad. But like Dick said we need two centre backs to replace the ageing Brown and O'Shea, a winger and a new striker. We'll probably see the back of some familiar faces, like Fletcher, Graham, Brown, O'Shea, and hopefully a string of background players just sucking up the wage bill. And possibly Johnson (which is rubbish because he's one of our good ones). So it'll feel like same old Sunderland with a brand new squad next year.

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
my watching of the match was that Newcastle benefitted from a lack-luster display from their opponents. Had they been up against a team actually trying properly I don't think Newcastle would have won irrespective of any improvement in effort on their part. Not trying to be inflammatory, don't take it personally, I just don't see it the same way you do. That is my opinion and it won't be changed by any huffing and puffing to the contrary.

My point is that you are very clearly NOT a neutral, as you have a disdain towards the Toon. Hell even a Mackem has said we deserved it and you cant get 'Neutral' in a worse way than that.
I guess as a Spurs fan you're just butthurt that you cant beat us at home :p

"But both parties opted not to pursue a possible deal following differences over recruitment and transfer policy."
Now I'm not sure Patrick Viera, a man with minimal managerial experience, would be the right man to take over any Premiership club, but this quote really sums up the attitude at Newcastle. They are just looking for another 'Yes!' man and have no interest in actually achieving anything despite this whole, 'we have to bolt the horse on' stuff that the fat controller was going on about. I don't blame them either, I have already voiced my concerns about Pardews long-term capability but there is no denying he was a patsy, which is essentially what they want to replace him with.
Looking like (if we actually manage to persuade ANYONE to take the position) we are going to end up with Steve McLaren, a man who already turned us down on multiple occasions and couldn't even get a reasonably decent Derby team into the championship playoffs. I personally dont see him performing even as well as Pardew did on his worst days so looks like another season of scrapping for survival for the Toon!
On a different note, I cannot believe what John Carver did to Jonas and Ryan Taylor; letting them go in the same phone call. Disgraceful behaviour. What kind of a gutless, compassion-less moron would do something like that?
Doesn't look like there is much chance of Dick staying at Sunderland. What's the current rumour for his replacement?

Agreed, totally gutless. Jonas is an outstanding story for you guys and Carver has just spat all over it.
Dick is long gone sadly. Sounds like his wife didn't want him to do another year. But it's for the best TBH. We need to put in place a manager we can rely on for the next 5 years and we need to stop chopping and changing ever year. Dick didn't have 5 years in him. Which is a total shame as I believe we will not get a manager as technically capable or as successful as him.
Lots of names have been bandied around recently. Many were never an actual consideration but just an effort to stir up a story.
Currently it's between Sean Dyche and Bernd Schuster. Bernd Schuster being my preference, with his Real Madrid experience hopefully he can take Mr Short's wallet and get some interesting talent and inject some pace into the attack.
Our back 4 no long looks like it's about to fall about. We'll pick up Coates pretty cheap and hopefully finally nail Van Dijk (he's keen to join the premier league but he is going to have to get to grips with losing a lot more often than he already does!) so I think I'm cautiously optimistic if we get Bernd Schuster. Sean Dyche on the other hand, I'm not a great fan of. It just doesn't feel like a great idea to pick up a manager who relegated a team last year...
Steve McClaren looks very close to signing for you. Feels like a substandard employment by Ashley, saves a few £££'s and he knows he keep Steve off his wallet. Everything Cashley wants.

I actually think Sean Dyche would be a great manager and would happily take him over almost all of the other names thrown about at the Toon. The way I see it, he managed a team that was significantly lacking in quality and had them fighting way above their weight. Sounds like the perfect manager for a North East team if you ask me!
I don't see him leaving Burnley though if I'm honest, he is well liked there.

Well I may have to eat my words regarding Advocaat being long gone ! In which case Sean Dyche and everyone else can swivel for the next 12 months.
But if this does come to be then that's great. We have 12 full months to find a suitable replacement for the dutchman and in the mean time we get a very successful manager. Happy days.

equally though Ashley is no longer on the board, but the coaching staff are! Could bode well if they (and not Ashley) get to influence transfer policy. It still needs Ashley to put up the funds though. Let's see how that turns out.
-
Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
This is the best article I have read on the subject so far:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/33089833
Pretty much sums up the situation at the Toon perfectly, especially the section talking about this myth of Newcastle supporters expecting to win everything:
" Bit of a myth this one - the wisdom being that Newcastle's fans demand a Premier League challenge every season and a team shaping up to challenge for the Champions League.
This is a nonsense. Newcastle's vast support simply want a team that reflects the fact that 52,000 Tynesiders turn up at St. James' Park for every home game, a team making a decent fist of it in the league and challenging for a cup. "
Personally this appointment leaves a rather bitter taste in my mouth, but we are seeing signs of change so I feel its only fair to withhold judgement until the new regime has had a fair shot. They have offered McLaren a £1m bonus if he can bring in some silverwear and put him on the board which, at least on the surface, seems to be a departure from the puppeteering days of Pardew.
I'm slightly baffled that Graham Carr hasn't had the spotlight shined in his eyes, he is after all in charge of recruitment so is just as much to blame as the others for position at the end of last season.

oh that ostrich thing is being blown out of all proportion. He was trying to say the reporter must have buried his head in the sand (like an ostrich). Frankly it's hardly a big deal, even the reporter said he didn't really mind. I can't help but wonder though wtf is the point in sacking the guy who saved your bacon? Is it cos the owner is Thai and he has a problem with that video of the manager's son? I thought Pearson (senior) was the one to sack him. Can't be fairer than that. And they still sack the manager! Crazy. Even Mike Ashley gives managers a few weeks at the start of the season to lose a few games before he wields the axe. I can't imagine what moral must (not) be like in the Leicester camp right now. I bet they crash and burn this season, and the Thai owners will only have themselves to blame.

I suppose it depends who they bring it replace him, but I suspect you're correct.

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
Very unlikely that the successor at LCFC will be able to motivate the squad in the same remarkable way that Pearson did - though that level of over reaching effort was not sustainable for much longer without lots of injuries IMO.
Not been in Leicester long, really enjoyed the spirit and banter with the locals as LCFC somehow escaped relegation - I really do not envy them having to go through it all again.
-
Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
unless they can land Martin O Neil again they have just sacked the best manager they could have hoped to have - and indeed IMO the best manager they have had since MoN. They'll end up with some 2nd rater another mediocre Sven at best or at worst another Paulo Sousa. Do I sense another "5 managers in one season" special a la 2010-2011?
I've just been going through some of the stats on the wiki page. Pearson has the best win % for games played of any manager in their history (his first spell in charge) and the 4th best (his second spell in charge). His win % exceeds Martin O'Neill, but I guess MoN did land some silverware. I have to say I prefer the style of play Pearson has favoured, with proper attacking play and not just battening-down the hatches and trying to nab a set-piece like other managers (e.g. allardyce etc) would almost certainly have retreated to last season. MoN left them in 2000 and apart from Micky Adams' brief stint during the yoyo years they haven't had a stable manager since then - until Pearson in 2011.
Why oh why did they sack him? It makes no sense. The squad is tight and united, camaraderie through the roof, finished the season on a high with key players renewing their contracts. I wonder if it is some transfer budget/medelling thing that hasn't been made public.

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
I would start a new thread for the new season, but with Ranieri at the helm i think the current title is quite relevant. I'm not a betting man, but surely it's a done deal for relegation and Ranieri being fired. FFS the owner has cut his nose off to spite his face getting rid of Pearson. What a muppet.

The unsinkable manager, meet the no-chance team.
Who will break first? There's only one way to find out! FIIIIIGHT.
We have shot ourselves in the foot. Sacked the best (technically) and most successful manager we've had(...ever?) as he start poorly.
At the risk of sounding like a geordie, I think Short pulled the purse strings very tight very suddenly. Lens is a great signing, so is M'Vila (but on loan). But I feel one thing has been told to Advocaat ("Loads will be spent") and another to Congerton ("Penny pinch").
Advocaat clearly said 5 or 6 international players of high quality. He got a couple forward options and then some bargain basement defence options.
I wouldn't even mind if we got relegated. We deserve it. It'll give us a clean break and allow us to ship some really high earning players. Fletcher, Johnson, Rodwell. Have all shown glimpses recently but not put it down on the pitch when we needed them too. And who knows, we might not even need to sell Johnson!
Clear out our CB's, Koubles can go, you don't want an injury prone CB, he needs to be a total rock for you. Coates, Brown, O'shea need gotten rid of. Get some proper fresh blood. Adam Mathews could be interesting and I'm keen on Van Aanholts super aggressive play style but you need goed CB to cover that. And with Advocaat getting the fullbacks to bomb up he really needed that, but just didn't get it.
Dropping down would also give the Academy a chance to return it's investment because all it's produced is Henderson and Colback. And we didn't even sell Colback!
One positive to take away from the start of this season, at least we weren't boring. We scored and conceded and we played fast aggressive football. Poorly, at times but the intention was there. The quality was just lacking.
Now with Big Sam. It's going to be tight and regimented. Defoe will be happy as he's going to played a CF again and probably Borini tucking in in front of him. But Lens hasn't got the temper to play tight football, Toivenen is a creative player who plays well high up the pitch, will he be selected as part of a midfield two? Probably not. So we'll play M'Vila/Cattermole and probably Nolan when he signs on a free.
I despair. We're going down and we're going to be boring about it!
Hopefull, the mags come with us and we pass the smoggies who are travelling up!

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
After a good couple of seasons at West Ham, Allardyce completely lost the plot for reasons unbeknown. He morphed into a defeatist and a bitter buffoon whilst deploying inexplicable tactics. Reading some exerts from his unintentionally hilarious autobiography, it's evident he's still a lost it clown. I don't think the Mackems have any idea what's coming their way. They soon will.

I thought it was going to end up 9-8 after the first 20 minutes. Glad it didn't. Good win, but we won't be able to defend like that against the top teams and come away with a win...

Re: The end is near... (football relegation talk)
Really should start a new thread but the title still feels appropriate...
It's nearly time for the Tyne-Wear derby. Which, can we all agree, is at the very least in the top 3 of UK based derbys, if not the top derby.
So what's everyone's opinion/estimations?
Now that the pressure is on us to extend the winning streak we're going to snap.
1-0 the mags in a game totally devoid of talent but with 10 yellow cards and Cattermole sent off in the first half.

Its easily the derby with the most fierce history. Annoyingly, it also still feels like a 6 pointer, which as a Newcastle fan is ridiculous given the money we have spent.
There is also the Manchester Derby which is a pretty big deal this season for the opposite reason, the winner of it could quite easily be in with a chance of the title.

My Dads naively thinks the Toon have got this one in the bag. I, like you perhaps, think this one will be decided on discipline.
Norwich was a great confidence booster for us and it really demonstrated how well we can play going forward, but our defense is still a shambles, our midfielders don't track back enough to support our badly organized defensive line (which why I would say that the Norwich scoreline does not tell the full story of the game).
Big Sam wont let the Mackams leave the same kind of space as Norwich did, hes going to have all that locked down and try to play his usual root-1 football which is exactly the kind of thing that could catch us out.
I think its going to be a very physical, hard fought game. Newcastle will have the possession statistics, im fairly certain, but I really cant make a call on the scoreline. It all depends who gets the first red card....
