Advice on a new pedal Bike

I'm looking to buy a new bike (pedal) for myself but don’t really have any idea what I should be looking for.

I want to spend around £ 300-400 with disk brakes, full suspension for general use not riding off the edge of huge mountains or anything like that.

What brands should I be looking for / specific bikes anyone can recommend / places to look?

    Cheers

Do they do full suspension for everyday use? You use a lot of energy bouncing up and down on the rear suspension. If you're doing much road riding, I'd go for a hard tail and get one of those suspension-seatpoles. Just imo of course.

on new bikes... I only know the higher end stuff.

What are you doing on your bike?

Its the seat pole type I was looking for , I dont know know what I am talking about and thought this was full suspension - Doh.

Just general stuff really mainly roads / slight off road so probably your suggestion of hard tail and get one of those suspension-seatpoles.

Your best bet is to go to a few local bike shops, they're by far the best and can give you a good deal. As for suspension, even if you were to go off-roading, you only need the front suspension if anything, because at that price range i've found bikes generally have crappy rear suspension or a crappy bike chain, which usually go after a year or two of usage.

For the price-range you've suggested, i'd definately recommend a GT hard-tail bike. Will come with everything you've asked for and then some, you won't be disappointed. Check them out here.

    Hope this helps

Sorry to butt in, but the absolute best bike for your budget is the Claude Butler Cape Wrath.
Try and find a stockist with 2005 bikes, as they are cheaper than 2006 ones.
There is nothing else out there to touch it.
No discs, but an easy retrofit.
