    Upgrading to SSD?

    Hi all,

Just a quick question about installing an SSD as a boot drive (just finished 1st build and I'm looking at upgrades already ).

If I decide to go this route how would I transfer the OS onto this to use as a boot drive? Just had a quick look online but can't really find this info easily so was wondering if you good people could help?

    Thanks

    Re: Upgrading to SSD?

You might be able to do it using something like True Image, I did mine like that and managed to get the SSD mis-aligned. So I'm not the best person to ask about it.

    Re: Upgrading to SSD?

Tried this myself, had all sorts of problems.

I would highly recommend doing a fresh install.

Normal disk to disk is usually fine, but considering all of the tweaks windows does with SSDs and considering how vastly different they are, I think it makes much more sense to start from fresh.

That is how I understand it. Although I thought the Kingston kits came with software to copy your original disk to the SSD.

At least it forced me to do a fresh install which cannot be a bad thing.

    Re: Upgrading to SSD?

I did ghost my OS on to my new SSD, but the performance of the drive didn't really show till I reformatted and gave it a nice fresh install. so if anything do it short term then reformat when your ready

    Re: Upgrading to SSD?

Since your current drive(s) are probably in IDE mode, I would recommend changing your SATA bios setting over to AHCI mode with the SSD Installed followed by a fresh install of windows (preferably 7) Then assuming you have an intel based controller on your board install Intels Rapid Storage Driver and you'll already be on your way to getting the SSD flying.

I've known of people having a few issues by imaging their SSD's but they could have just been unlucky, personally I'd do the above ^^.
