    n5200 - Raid 5 Degraded

this evening my n5200 was stuck - the led panel was stuck - no access via the web interface - no access via the LAN. Reboot via the front switch did nothing. There was not disk access

I am running 2.00.03 beta, with 5 x 1 TB disks Hitachi HDS721010KLA330 disks. The n5200 and disks are 4 weeks old.

I cut the power and rebooted - when i came back up it reported that the raid is degraded.

Checking the web raid status indicated that disk 4 is lost from the raid. Not errors are shows on the disk web overview, or on the front led (not red error).

I suspect that this is a software error.

how can I get the raid back to healthy state with all 5 disk operational.

    Regards Lars

how did you have the raid built,

    4+1 partiy
    3+1 parity + 1 spare
    It is Inevitable.....

    Re: n5200 - Raid 5 Degraded

I have the same problem with my N5200Pro, it works for a while, then drops one of the disks. I have to go to RAID, then add the dropped disk as spare and Add to RAID. It will then rebuild the disk, takes a while depending on the amount of data on the RAID. My problem is that the disk is dropped again at least once a week. I have replaces the disk two times, it still happens, so must be something wrong with the NAS. I want to get it replaced!

Thanks, yes I did the same yesterday - added disk no 4 as spare - it took 14 hours, then the raid was back to healthy. Must be a software and/or hardware error on the box, as the disk have not errors.

    Re: n5200 - Raid 5 Degraded

Seems that this was a problem when FW 1.00.07 was introduced. Apparently this problem has come back, or maybe it was not fully fixed.

Here is an extract from the 1.00.07 release notes

    "[New Features/Changes]
    1. Revised the assemble RAID mechanism to avoid wrongfully degraded problem caused by abnormal shutdown."

Sky/Kjel, are you using the auto-power down feature or is the unit on 24/7?

    Re: n5200 - Raid 5 Degraded

    Mickey,

The unit is on 24/7, with lots of read/writes. I just lost a disk Yesterday, the Disk web page says that one disk has a warning with Pending sectors. I rebooted the system, and no errors. I'm adding the disk to the RAID again now. The problem is that I have changed this disk two times now, and it's always that bay that is the problem. Thecus will look at it, but not sure if I will get a fix. I'm wondering if I should by another NAS from another company, I cannot live with this one! What is regarded as the best 4/5 bay NAS system out there ?

    Re: n5200 - Raid 5 Degraded

    The unit was on 24/7.

I have now switched on nightly reboot - maybe this will clear out any software issues (i.e. mem leak) that possibly caused the freeze I had that forced me to cut the power.

    Re: n5200 - Raid 5 Degraded

This is a problem on some older linux kernels and certain hard disk brands and controllers getting "fault" or "failure" signals at the wrong time.

As your devices are all built around linux I can only assume the firmware OS your using has these problems too.

    Re: n5200 - Raid 5 Degraded

    Daer Sir,

If possible, please shut down N5200 and exchang the disk 4 to others bays, thus we could verify it issue come form the HDD or N5200 itself.

About the V1.00.07 new fucntion 1, we loosen the RAID dearage judgement, if power break make RAID degrade in possible range. This new function avoid user get problem if RAID from some power break, it is no related to RAID fucntion issue.

    Re: n5200 - Raid 5 Degraded

Can I do this without rebuilding the raid from scratch ?

    Re: n5200 - Raid 5 Degraded

    Dear Sir,

Due to your RAID degrade constainly, thus we would need confirm what the root cause from the HDD or N5200 itself first. If this N5200 make you uncomfortable and data in risk, please contact with your reseller for checking or replace a motherboard and try.

    I thought to a HW problem ( disk and/or Thecus )

I've tested the failed disk on another host without finding any problem ( I used seatools for my seagate disk).

After that I've re-put the disk in the Thecus. And the disk failed too!
But the disk works!!! So I thought...could be dust...and so after a air compress cleaning cycle the disk was available and working.

Strange. But this happens to me.
Now remain a question! On the web interface the disk is on warning state sue to fact that
I can't reset some value from smart table:
