Question N4100+ adding new disks to RAID

    Hi All,

I have an N4100+ NAS that is currently configured with two 1TB drives in RAID 1, with the other two drive bays empty.

I would like to add another 2 * 1TB drives and also configure them in RAID 1, effectively doubling my capacity.

Obviously I want to retain the data on the existing drives when I add the new ones. I scanned through the other posts and found similar questions regarding 'RAID volume expansion', but I couldn't find my exact scenario and don't want to assume anything after seeing some of the horror stories!

Can anybody tell me what my options are please?

    Best regards,
    Eurka

Re: N4100+ adding new disks to RAID

    Daer Sir,

The N4100+ doesn't support 'RAID volume expansion' function, current only 1U4500 or N5200/PRO support this fucntion. But we could join this 2 HDD into N4100+ as a spare HDD, if any HDD out of RAID, and system would join the new HDD into RAID. But but if HDD power up already which menas HDD is running too, thus we would recommend back up data first and than create a new RAID would be better.

Hmmm, back up data, add new disks, recreate RAID, reload data - hardly convenient! Will think hard about any future NAS purchase. Thanks for the response.

hmm, may be You should read the features before buying - some NAS supporting it, some NAS not.

Thanks for your helpful comment there peterfu, but sometimes you don't always know what you'll need in future! I wrongly assumed I would easily be able to increase my capacity, but with hindsight I should have looked more closely at the product before purchasing it, hence my comment regarding thinking hard next time.
