as above, my rock keeps away tigers. I don't see any tigers.

One of the reasons i don't like NOD32, google
    eset reported (the parent company)
    or
    eset paper

    then look at
    sophos reported
    sophos paper

    or kaspersky.... etc.

An anti-virus software is only worth buying if THEY are contributing too the research against the spread of viruses.

From what I understand, NoD32 & Kaspersky are the best ones you have to pay for and Avast AV is the best freebie.

However, I've been using for the last few years:

    Antivir AV
    AdAwareSE
    Spybot Search & Destroy
    Crap Cleaner
    Windows XP Firewall
    Router hardware firewall
Mailwasher free (one address only) version

And I've never suffered from any nasties in that time.

I got a bit worried and downloaded trial version of Kaspersky all-in-one (£40.00 a year) ran it (took an hour) and it didn't detect a thing.

So I'll stick with me freebies.

And if you're wondering how Avast & Antivir manage to give basic programs away free, it's because they're getting constant feedback from every customer, free or paid versions, which enables them to stay ahead of nasties and make them competitive.

    It be the truth

Nod32 here in Vistax64. Used i for a while now with no complaint. A decent software firewall in x64 would be nice. (Tried jetico x64 & was a complete mare). Have H/W firewall anyway.

kaspersky gets my vote for best overall scanner, takes a lil bit of cpu n memory but not as bad as norton or mcafee. detection is one of the best. the scan engine is used in a few other programs such as gdata avk, fsecure, steganos. the gui on the hole is very good. scanning speeds are average.
its a shame i had to uninstall it cos i screwed the program up and and it wont reinstall.

I recently changed from Norton which is a resoruce hogger to Zone Alarm Anti Virus and have to say its pretty damn good. Ive not had any problems with it and the second it finds summet it doesnt like it tells me.

I use Spy Sweeper but am having trouble activating it as I dont have a damn credit card neither does anyone in my house.

I have heard of Nod before but never really considered using it, ive also heard of Kaspersky from a mate also who swears by it.
After looking at the price it seems worth giving it ago.

Maybe when my Zone Alarm subscription runs out ill look at it and see how good it really is.

I also run Hitman Pro once a month and have AdAware SE running. Router hardware firewall also which i have noticed helps alot compared to just having a software firewall.

Ive heard of crap cleaner but never really looked at it, is it that good and is it worth using?

Problem for me is my bro likes to look at X - Rated websites and often just accepts stuff without reading but fortunately ive not had any problems since building my new machine and using Zone Alarm.

My own experience, not saying it's the best.

Using Win XP SP2; Antivir free AV; AdAwareSE; Spybot Search & Destroy; Crap Cleaner; Windows Firewall and Hardware firewall via Netgear Router/Modem.

All the software I've mentioned is free or comes with Windows.

I haven't had a virus in around 4 years now and yes, I do visit some dodgy sites sometimes.

Friend of mine recently subscribed to the Kaspersky full Monty, £40.00 a year, and it picked up on a lot of stuff.

I downloaded the trial version of the same thing, uninstalled Antivir, ran the Kaspersky program in full, it took about 45 minutes - and it didn't find a thing.

So, I thought why pay forty quid when a bunch of freebie programs and some common sense on my part are keeping the nasties at bay?

This is not to demean the likes of Kaspersky, Nod 32 et al, I think they're good, but paying nowt seems to be working admirably for me

U can get bitdefender for 2 yrs for 2pc's @ £5.00, thats the OEM version tho. Normal is about £30 for same deal. http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/120680
I was recommended this by a buddy and after lookin it up on the net Bitdefender is rated really high, specially for the price. Anyone had any experience with it?

You signed up to post that? Wow.

If you extend that arguement, use a Mac, no-ones ever bothered writing a virus for it.
