    Re: 4gb memory or more

hi there, depending on the version of windows vista you are running......

if you are running a 32bit operating system you can put 4gb in the machine - but windows will only see 3.1gb due to limitations of 32bit systems....

if you run a 64bit operating system - then windows will use what ever you put into the machine

    hope this helps

    Re: 4gb memory or more

64bit Vista is the way foward. I've been running x64 Ultimate for ages & it's ok, everything works. Beware only if you have old hardware or old games, so check there are drivers available for all your kit before switching.

+ it is memory hungry, 4 gb is good for Vista x64.

    Re: 4gb memory or more

hi there, vista 64 is the way forward, if you are using older hardware/software the there can be compataiblitiy problems.....
most hardware now have drivers for 64 bit vista ready or as beta version......

if you want 4gb or more of memory then i am afraid vista 64bit is the way to go.....

a service pack that should help vista solve a lot of problems is due very soon aswell....

    hope this helps

I'm also waiting to buy Windows as my last item. Any clue when disks with SP1 on already will start shipping/become available? OEM version that is?

    Re: 4gb memory or more

I have 4GB RAM in my Vista box - it was showing up in Windows as 3.25GB. I took out a couple of PCI devices (sound & TV cards) and it went up to 3.5GB. Just FYI!

Out of interest, how is easy is it to upgrade a copy of x32 premium to x64? is it even possible to do that or would I have to buy another copy? ...I may have a look in a mo but I'm in some remote site office today, internet is slow.

Zadock : 4gb memory or more

as far i know there is no way of upgrading from a 32bit o/s system to a 64bit o/s system.....

if you want 64 bit then you need to do a full install

If I remember correctly, the retail versions of Vista have 32-bit and 64-bit licences included in the cost, but the OEM version is either 32-bit or 64-bit, with no upgrade path for the licence, let alone an install route for upgrading. It's a case of buying the 64-bit version, then re-installing.

    Unless I mis-remember?

I think he meant can he change his 32bit DVD for a 64 bit one - in which case yes isn't it?
