Asus P5K LAN problem, please help

    Hello

I purchased a set of components from YoYoTech in Tottenham Court Road about last month and have been experiencing problems with the onboard LAN with the Asus P5K Motherboard. I plug my ethernet cable to the back of the computer in order to access the internet. The problem comes after "x" amount of time. This is where I get disconnected or causes me to not access to internet anymore.

When I right click repair on the local area connection it will take very long in the status of "renewing IP address" and after some while it will just say failed to renew IP address.

When I tried to use the windows internet explorer diagnosis program it will say to me that the renewing IP adderss has timed out.

The driver I installed the LAN with is in the CD that came with the motherboard which is version 2.1.6000.0. That didnt work properly so I decided to go on the Asus website and download their one wich is the same version and still didnt work.

Tried reinstalling OS and didnt work. Upgraded OS from xp home to xp pro and still didnt work.

When i perform continuous ping command to my default gateway it will give normal replies (reply from 000.000.0.0...) but after some time it will display "request timed out".

I know its not the internet because the internet connection is fine due the fact that i can access the inernet with other wireless devices such as PSPs and mobile phones.

    My computer specs are:
    Asus P5K motherboard
    Intel Core 2 E8400
    ATI Radeon HD3650 512mb
    Windows XP Professional
    4GB OCZ Ram
    750GB HD (1 x 250gb 1 x 500gb)

Please help me sort this problem out. Its getting pretty annoying and I dont have a stable internet connection. If anymore information is needed please let me know.

    Thanks in advance
    JVolution

    Hi JVolution,

Can you try updating the BIOS to the latest which is 1006?

    Asus Support Site

You will need to reset the CMOS once you have applied the update.

If this doesnt help then you can bring the board in to the store, or send it it for testing.

    Kind Regards

    Ben

Re: Asus P5K LAN problem, please help

    Hi

The BIOS has already been updated to 1006 and CMOS has been cleared previously.

Can I ask what would happen after I bring the board in to test or to send off? Maybe in terms of waiting time and such.

Thank you for you help. I emailed Asus on the same day as the first post and they havent even got back to me yet.

    Hi JVolution,

Once the board is with us, we would send it to Asus
Asus then sends it of to there technical dept based in Holland
I would say the turn around is about 3/4 weeks, sometimes quicker

    Regards
    Kul

Re: Asus P5K LAN problem, please help

    Hi there,

If you are connecting to a switch / router / other to get your internet then try forcing your connection speed to the same as the maximum speed the port runs at.

E.g. if you have an adsl modem/router that has 4x 10/100 ports:
control panel - network connections - right click on your local area connection - properties
click the configure button for the network adaptor (connect using: )
    click on the advanced tab
speed & duplex settings (or something similar)*
then select Force 100 Full duplex in the value dropdown box (if you have a gigabit switch then select force 1000 full duplex instead)*

*The last 2 is dependant on type of network adaptor present.

This forces the connection between the ports at the two ends of your network cable to be the same configuration, bypassing the autonegotiation that happens when you plug the network cable in. Sometimes there an issue between two different manufacturers or network ports - they just can't autonegitiate properly which leads to alot of frustration.

Really hope that helps! Good luck.

On a different note, 3-4 week turnaround for a motherboard is really poor. Is that the normal turnaround for Asus? I was about to buy an Asus P5Q Pro but now I'm not so sure.

    Regards,

Of course the fastest way to resolve this is to just go and buy a 10/100 network card and use that intsead. Should be a £10 fix.

    Hi

Thank you for your help C2M and Kul. Since I am now on holiday and not in the country, I will not be able to take any of the actions any time soon. But buying a new network card seems to be the only garanteed fix for the problem.

Once again thank you very much for your help.
