You mean computers don't get heavier as you install more crap on them? You're lieing, my friend Lisa said that computers get heavier with more data!
Sarcasm aside, I can sort of understand the misconception...

if he defragged it, while the weight would continue to rise it would be better positioned on the drive, and therefore better balanced.

I wonder if they'll start to move the 4Tb external hard-drives with fork-lift trucks.
Can you imagine the weight of them nearly full of data. It's a H&S field day
We should be careful, if hard drives keep getting smaller, while still increasing capacity, we could reach a point where they have the potential to collapse and start forming black holes!

That is frighteningly stupid.
Saying that though, my Mum came up with a classic at the weekend. Before I begin, you need to understand that she's been using computers fairly regularly for over 10 years now, which makes it truly mindboggling how she didn't know this already:
About two weeks ago, we got her a new computer, and whilst on the phone to my Dad who chose it for her, he'd asked if everything was alright with it. She said: "Yes, it's a lot quicker than my old one, although one annoyance is that the compose email window is a bit too small on this new one - it's really hard to type long emails."
My Dad: ".... errr, what do you mean?!"
Mum: "The email window - it's too small"
Dad: "Err... why don't you just resize it?"
Mum: "You can resize a window? Well I never!"
WTF. I feel like I need to swap half of my genes for some better ones.
You should find this an informative read.

You might try getting another external drive and setting up an external RAID array. Make sure to set it up as RAID 0, as that is the lowest and lightest of the different types
RAID 0 killed the video star, its true
The poster was asking about how many GB per oz.
For FAT32 the 32 stands for the maximum weight of a file in oz and the maximum file size for FAT32 is 4 GB. Simple maths would say that 1GB weighs 8 oz.
This is why the Velociraptor drives have reduced their platter size, mainly for 2 reasons:
If a large file was placed on the outside edge of the platter the platter could sag.
The high rotational speed of the drive means that the size had to be reduced as a large file again on the outside of the platter could shatter the platter due to the centrepetal forces involved.
Captain Crash...your find is even better than previous ones. Top Marks matey
