What is the strangest food you have eaten?

Like the title says, what is the strangest food you have eaten, doesn't matter if it tastes good or bad.

For myself, I have lived and travelled in Asia, so these are some of my strangest food:

    - animal intestines, they don't really taste of anything
    - pig knuckles, horrible because there is a huge layer of fat and sometimes hair that was not shaved off (yuck)

A couple of things I saw but did not eat:

    - saw a street vendor skinning a snake while it was alive (apparently snake broth is popular)
    - saw some kind of turtle desert

Re: What is the strangest food you have eaten?

Remember listening to the Jonathon Ross radio show at 11am one Saturday morning when we're in the car and he's talking to Elton John. He had been asking everyone the same question "Whats the strangest thing you've eaten?". Elton replies "a clitoris". We giggled for a minute but then had to deal with a 6 year old and an 8 year old in the back asking "Whats a clitoris Mummy"

I suppose rabbit and squirrel aren't that commonly eaten, and ostrich is nice but becoming widely available.

Can't think of anything that strange.

I've had rabbit. I hated it, it smells really bad when you cook it.

Well you have to admit that's a very strange thing for Elton John to 'eat'.

Personally the worst thing I've ever eaten was the horrendous 'arse sausages' the french make (supposedly made out of tripe but trust me, even through a mustard sauce they taste more like they're made out of bowel than intestines):

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andouillette

Next on the list would be steak tartare which isn't really that strange at all and is very nice but you have to be able to trust the place making it:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steak_tartare

Third on the list would be just about any of the burnt offerings my mum served to me while I was growing up. I am 6' 1" but maintain I would be at least 6' 6" if I'd have had food with any nutrients left in it in my formative years. People never really believe me but I once threw one of my mum's jam tarts at a window and it went *through* it.

Armadillo and possum (although I'm not convinced that the possum wasn't a rat) The armadillo was in a segment - a bit like a oiece of meaty melon. Can't say I'd want to try them again though. (And yes, it was in a restaurant!)

Re: What is the strangest food you have eaten?

Pickled sea cucumber.. I had some friends who delighted in making me eat weird and wonderful stuff (being a fairly boring 'none of that fancy, foreign muck for me' kind of chap.) My memory of it was it tasted of vinegar with a slightly sour foamy taste, not dissimilar, I imagine, to dropping a bath sponge into a pickled onion jar and then eating it. They also made me eat tinned snails, once. They were rubbery and bland. There's a large photo of me about to drop one such unfortunate gastropod into my maw, somewhere.. not that exotic I suppose but.. yuck.

I've also eaten earthworms (dried) woodlice and various other unpleasant things on stupid cadet/survival/the Russians are coming to kill us all kind of weekends as a youngster. I also recall eating boiled bluebell bulbs which are supposed to be poisonous. They were extremely sticky/gloopy. Bleurgh.
