Contrary to my original posting, it's now my belief that the motherboard drivers do contain the right installers for the SATA side of things.
However, the original HDD appears to be faulty - it can't be read reliably when I attempt to view it attached externally to another PC. In addition, and this is the killer, I also think that the SATA on the motherboard is faulty.
And I've come to that conclusion only after I'd changed power and data cables - and used a different motherboard SATA port and a different (known good) lead from the PSU.
That being so, I took what seemed the only practical option and fitted a PATA HDD.
I then installed from an external USB optical drive cos I didn't want to use the existing PATA DVD burner, just in case the problem was with that drive failing to read the Vista installer disc - but it wasn't I'm now sure.
Then, once I had a working system on the PATA drive, I connected the PATA DVD burner as its slave and everything (well, everything except SATA) seems to be just fine.
Not sure how common it is for motherboard SATA to go AWOL but in this particular case, I think that's just what had happened - possibly causing corruption or damage to the original SATA system HDD.
When struggling to get things working with SATA, I'd extracted the motherboard zip file to a CD and, when trying a brand new SATA HD, the Vista installer just locked up if I didn't offer it drivers and failed to find the HDD if I did.
When I asked the installer to look for drivers, I also told it to show only hardware that is compatible with the motherboard.
It found SATA drivers but then didn't find the hard drive.
I'd also tried this with the original hard drive before trying a new SATA drive.
Trouble is, if my diagnosis is indeed correct and the SATA has failed, I'm left wondering what could go down next!
Again, thanks for your input.
Cheers
Bob
