Connecting my PC to net via O2 GPRS (PAYG) - Is it possible?

As I have no internet access at home right now, and it could be some time before BT fix my phone line (even dial-up is not posible), i was hoping to connect my PC using my mobile to get my email etc on the odd occasion. I am currently 'between contracts' at the moment, so just using an O2 Pay-As-You-Go Sony Erricson K610i.

I have installed Sony Erricson PC suite and connected my phone. PC suite shows it connected fine when i connect to the internet - even shows up/down totals (which change a bit as i request websites via firefox) and connection speed. However, any website requests just time out (server not responding) quickly.

Whats going on? Are O2 blocking the traffic? Am i missing a setting? Any idea how to get it working for PAYG 02 phones? Has anyone here managed to do it succesfully?

You can do it but it is really expensive. Its been a long time since I have done this however and not sure if the phone itself has a modem built into it. At the min there is a good chance that traffic is being blocked by O2 due to it being expensive to do. You would need to speak to their customer services about it.

If the phone doesn't have a modem you have to buy the relevant lead with the modem built into it, it will also come with the needed software. Thing is though not sure whether you can still get these leads.

Only other thing I can suggest is getting a USB dongle, Vodafone have a Payg variation instead of a contract. You pay for the modem and setup a direct debit which is £20 per month and get 3GB usage per month. Then when you get everything sorted you can just stop the direct debit. At least this way you will have a backup there for the future incase it happens again and you can just reactivate it.

Hi mate, cheers for the info. However, managed to get it working using HTTP Proxy: 193.113.200.195 and Port number: 8080 in firefox. Amazingly slow, but works ok.
