Slow network transfer speeds with Vista

I've reseached this on various sites on the the net and for some unfortuante people there STILL seems to be no cure for slow file transfers off network drives.

I run 64Bit Vista Ultimate, if I copy or move a file from my Synology 207+ I'm lucky to get 2-3MB/sec over 1Gb Ethernet. On the same PC on XP I get 35MB/sec. It's fully patched and a fresh installation.

Any ideas? Anyone been through the same process? I'm back on XP and think I will not be booting back into Vista any time soon at this point as I do a lot of network transfers.

Maybe a stupid question but when I installed Vista SP1 it did improve a bit. I assume when you say you are fully patched you mean you have installed SP1.

Odd, I get around the same speed (28-32MB/sec) on Windows XP x64 and Vista x64 from my NAS. SP1 addressed most of the issues regarding this "apparently".

are you transferring things from a zipped folder? That used to take forever on vista, not sure if it still does as I've not tried it recently.

Nah its just a standard network folder server up off a NAS formatted with EXT3.

What motherboard? How do you connect to your NAS? (ie do you have a switch between, and in which case what switch?) Have you tried transferring to another machine to get some sort of baseline (ie is it just slow transferring to/from the NAS, or to everything)? What disks/disk controller are you using?

Its an Abit x38 quad motherboard.
I had the opportunity to check the transfer rate from an XP machine tonight, it actually seems to be fine, which lead me to believe there's an issue with vista and the synology nas. There's a netgear gigabit switch between the two.
I'll have a look on the synology forums and see if anything is mentioned there.

Well I reapplied SP1 and all seems to be well now. All is forgiven........almost

I would disable IPv6 on your adapters, it casues all sorts of issues with data trasfer speeds.
