What i'd like to know is what people think about capital punishment [the death sentence] and whether it should become a punishment in the UK again.

if it helps reduce the prison problem.
I'd like to see 16+ year olds, who wear trackies, and bling eligable for this
yer i agree about the prison problem. They are definately too crowded
No, I don't believe anyone has the right to take a life, legally or no.
Having said that if something happened to the mrs or kids I may think differently I suppose. However I think life should mean life in prison. None of this namby-pamby prisoners human righs rubbish, in this country anyway.
Nope, death sentence is too easy for some people....plus you've got the whole 'if you got it wrong, you can't bring them back' argument.
I think that people guilty of capital punishment crimes should be sent to hard labour camps.....like salt mines.....where they can work out the rest of their days in exceedingly harsh conditions. Feed them well, don't work them to death, give them decent living conditions, but while they're working their ten hour shifts make them spend every working second regretting what they did and dreading the next day.

yer the life sentence in the UK is 14 years and you can get out in 9.
Criminals arn't scared by what punsihment they are going to get. If thats what you can call it.
They could start killing their own men if they were mental??
While I don't have a problem with making young offenders join the army, teach them discipline and a trade, I think that teaching seasoned offenders how to kill people and giving them access to all sorts of deadly weapons might be a step in the wrong direction.
Maybe if they were short of mine finding equipment.....

I can see this thread going in an unfortunate direction, quite possibly to be instigated by the OP, but I'll play along for the moment.
My personal view is that the death penalty should never be an option.
Sure thing, consider it, set up the perfect system with 100% accuracy and it's tempting to get rid of the permanently broken people. ...which is why I'd still say no.
But life should mean life in some cases and funding to mandatorily study your ass should be in place for the benefit of science and understanding and 'the greater good'.
...and i like the idea of bringing back stocks in the town square for local delinquents.

Capital Punishment should only be a last resort for cases where the evidence is outstanding and they've commited murder etc.
With the rest, I'd lock them all up for longer - but rather than keep them in cells with consoles and all the comforts, I would follow the "chain gang" setups in America and have armed guards taking prisoners out for some heavy duty work.
There's loads within the UK that needs improving such as footpaths and railway embankments etc, so get these working and improving these areas rather than letting them stay in their cells on the consoles and DVD players.
Lee: +1
1. It's been proven not to work as a deterrant to criminals in just about every US state where they still use it.
2. It's a massive drain on resources because of the very long appeals processes for prisoners who are kept in solitary the entire time.
3. And to cap it off there's absolutely no reprieve in the case of a miscarriage of justice!
Oh, and QFT
