    Question Crysis-killing PC from Scan?

Apparently the i7 is buggy and to be avoided from what I'm told here - sounds a bit like hyperbole to me?

4 posts from me here if anyone can be bothered to read! (Please?):

(P.S. I apologise in advance for the (very occasional) swearing, I know those 2 guys from before, I actually tried to edit it out before linking here but they have a 30 minute edit limit)

Someone on an online forum in "saying something controversial, and possibly not too well thought through" shock. Opinions are like *rs*h*l*s - everybody's got one, and so, obviously, does Magnetohead.

Not quite sure what your question is - or indeed whether it's Scan-specific. The thread seems to relate to a system you purchased from OcUK, and then morphs into something else. Did you not get any suitable answers in the forum you're linking us to?

I thought similar, but moogle over here seems to think the same, so it's just a bit worrying. I'm not one of those people who takes rumours as fact, I research. I'm just asking for more input.

(BTW why bother starring it out if it's obvious what you're saying anyway isn't that a little childish? Or is it against one of the rules?)

    or 2/3 GTX 280s instead of 1 hd4870x2 (I read 2 GTX 280s is better?)

or a better motherboard wouldn't help? I googled some reviews for the one I have (Abit IP35 Pro XE Intel P35 (Socket LGA775) PCI-Express DDR2) and apparently it's not too good

This is around 3k more than the one I bought, but maybe it's worth it when I'm going for crysis on very high 16xQ AA (preferably with running at native resolution 2560x1600)?

another issue: watching other videos on youtube, people don't seem to get the same thing as me, I don't know why it is but the medium/small rocks/boulders on the ground and barrels seem to pop into existence at a certain distance suddenly, it looks very odd and artificial - no idea why I get this? Also while I can select "Objects Quality" to very high in the benchmarking program, it doesn't let me set higher than High in Crysis itself (though all the other settings it lets me change to whatever)
Bolded the scan bit I basically want someone to explain to me how it's better, sell me on it. Obv it's a Sunday though so I'll wait for the rather better mannered Scan people I guess

    Re: Crysis-killing PC from Scan?

    Replying upon your request

As for i7 being buggy, I'm not sure of that. Maybe buggy as in some boards (ASUS Rampage Extreme II) having memory compatibility issues. But the BIOS's are being updated to sort that out. It is still expensive though, especially for gaming.
You should have a read of this article from bit-tech. It mainly shows what is top in price/performance for a range of applications. You'll see the E8xxx CPU come up top in the game area as well as the Q6600 but both overclocked.

The Quad core Q6600 (which from what I've read from your post is what you've bought) probably can't clock as high as an E8xxx series CPU and although it may beat an E8xxx CPU in 3DMark06 (only because it's multithreaded) in most games which don't utilize the cores the E8xxx CPU will be good especially when you clock them as they are known to easily reach 4GHz+ on air. Right now i7 is expensive because the motherboards are like £300+ and to utilize them to the max it's recommended to get a triple channel kit. You can use non triple channel DDR3 memory as well if you wanted to and I'm not sure if you could just use 3 sticks of lets say a 4 pack of memory but I don't know if that'd run in triple channel either.

Now Richh might say the post above is my opinion but I've been doing a fair bit of reading (as I always do ) to keep up to date with whats what on hardware. The i7's are right now, at premium prices for performance as you really won't get a huge jump from a Core 2 setup. However if it gives such a jump that you can play your games at 60fps average or more then I'd say it might be worth the price *if* playing at the max settings with decent fps is your higher priority when getting the PC

    Re: Crysis-killing PC from Scan?

I saw earlier on Futuremark's stat thing (I stopped using 3dmark 3dmark vantage etc though since it didn't seem to show my stats except very basic details about what my system was on the webpage after running all the tests, not sure why) that someone clocked a Q9750 (or whatever the latest number was again) to something like 5ghz, but it said the system was watercooled, so I dunno. Crysis definitely uses all 4 cores from what I've read, but other games hmm - ok so a Q6600 isn't going to reasonably OC to 4ghz, but one of the newer ones should I reckon? Though, I've never overclocked myself so I'd probably end up taking it to a shop less I can find safe step by step instructions anywhere, heh

    Re: Crysis-killing PC from Scan?

Yeah the newer Q9xxx quads can get to 4GHz, but probably still need watercooling
I've never tried on air. Overclocking isn't that hard, and neither is self building the PC. You could save quite a few bob making the PC yourself.
