Still a fantastic looking car when in good nick. One of the most fun cars i have driven
One car i would be driving around in if i could afford one...a m8 had an S2 with a nigh-on 300BHP 2litre Power Engineering motor, that engine in an S1 would of been my idea of heaven...well, after the pile of bits i own which is supposed to be a Mk1 Escort Mexico...that restored and fitted with a tweaked Cossie lump would be fun...

    Honda CRX V-Tec.

I'd still love one, a late J plate model.

200sx (S14a) is also on my list for "one day"

As my contribution to this thread (I'm sure I remember it first time round, why didn't I join in then ), I have no choice but to say the Mk1 MR2.

Saw one of these yesterday and thought it should go in here.

I don't know what it is like to drive, but i think it looks great and will be considered a comfy classic rather than a sporty one.

Modern Classic has got to be the McLaren F1. BMW engine, gold used as a heat reflector, fastest production car in the world until recently. Hasn't that got to be a modern classic?

EDIT - Also The Porsche Boxster - the car that saved Porsche financially.

i dont think the mccaren f1 is really ever going to be a classic car - theres simply not enough of them made - everyone knows what one looks like, but who's actually seen one? think to what are classics now - the e-type was massively popular, yet now is definately a classic - the f1 was simply too limited imo - it will go down in history, but not really as a classic, in my opinion.

If be engine you mean head and block castings then yes it is a BMW engine. The rest of it is British Built

The way people are talking about future classics here, every single performance version of any car available will be a future classic. In fact if you think about it are there any performance cars that are 30 ish years old that aren't considered classics these days?
I'm sure a Vauxhall Nova Gsi will be considered a classic by some in the future, efven though they are cr@p

I think you are missing the whole point about classic cars, they don't *have* to be performance vehicles. In fact, they tend to be the whole vehicle range rather than one specific model. A Capri doesn't have to be a 280 Special or a 3.0S, it can be a 1.6 and still a classic. For it to be a classic, a model generally has to be 2 generations out of date. e.g. the Mk.5 Cortina (which predates the Sierra, which in turn predates the Mondeo) is just becoming a classic. Being this old usually means that they aren't in day to day usage and thus become an unusual sight. Of course, it does tend to be the sportier models that are kept in better condition and have more money spent maintaining them while the bottom end model is left to fall apart.

Crappiness is certainly not a bar to being considered a classic! Triumph Heralds were absolute dogs, VW Beetles and Transporters are laughably slow, unreliable and horrible to drive. Yet they all have that certain something. Despite their stunning engineering most BMWs and Mercedes will never become classics (although many Porsches will). Nova GSi? Hmm, not so sure. Only if enough survive being MaxPowered!
