    I've fried my QuadGT!

Ok, fine, I admit I'm am one dumb ***se, trying to be clever, and on top of that, I've potentially thrown 100 quid into the bin. Enough of that.

As i was setting out my board, I switched on and a flame (yes, a flame!) appeared on my board. The board now won;t go anywhere with an 8.3 message on the LED.

I'm keen to find out if there's still any life left in this board, or I should just throw into the bin? I also doubt that I would be covered by the returns policy as this was obviously my problem.

I'm posting the images in next msg

Not quite sure redd - as far as I can see, I had all my connections ok, before hooking up Hdds.
Looks like it didn't like my connection at the sysFan ???

I was using a CoolerMaster iGreen 650W PSU

Well ,I can't see very clearly but that looks like a power transistor that is 'burned' in that picture . If you can find out what the number is you may be able to replace it or get it replaced but it just depends on what if any other components the 'power surge has taken out' . Best speaking to Abit people for part number and advice on whether it is economic to repair. Power tranny won't cost a lot and it may be worthwhile getting it replaced for a start and if that does not cure the board then it is a decision that you will have to make as to how far you want to go with it.

That certainly looks like a board fault unless something was on there to short it.

Are you not telling us something if you think you are to blame?

If you plugged everything in right, it can't be your fault.

You didn't plug the fan header in the wrong way around did you, polarising it?

Its pretty difficult to plug a fan in the wrong way round, if he did he would have bent the fan pins, so it would be obvious.

the fan header went in nice and easy! It's normally very difficult to plug in anything the wrong way round in modern designs.

The component that has combusted is the MOSFET controlling the output on the SYSFAN1 header. If this was the only component that had failed, the board would most likely still be working properly. Ergo, chances are something else has been affected by this problem, albeit not as graphically.

What did you mean in your original post when you said you were "trying to be clever"?

About the only external cause of the failure you have suffered would be shorting out the fan header - did you do anything that could have caused such a short? Alternatively, did you plug a fan into that header, and is the fan still working alright?
    BH6, BX6 2.0, BE6, BE6-II 2.0, ST6-RAID, BE6-II 2.0 (again), BD7-RAID, BD7II-RAID, IC7-G, IC7 Max3, AB9 QuadGT, IX38 QuadGT. IX58... Oh, b*ll*cks. RIP Abit

The board now flashes continously when switched on (i tried this only once and never connected it again). It also displays the 8.3 code on the LED display.

I did plug the fan into the header - yes. The rest of the connections were as normal, too.

Re: "trying to be clever", i guess i wanted to get across the point that i am a relative newbie in building PCs, but have done a couple now, without any problems (until now of course!)

    What flashes?
If you are talking about the blue lights on the board - that's normal

8.3 is a PSU error - what are you using?
See the other thread in here regarding this error

    I'm using a Coolermaster iGreen 650W.

Just gone through the other post re 8.3 error. "ABIT Sean" has advised me not to switch on further until the mobo has been properly tested.

    Thanks for your help, though
