    Angry AB9 QuadGT Error 8.3

Got a whole new rig including the following parts

    Motherboard: Abit Quad GT
    Motherboard Chipset: Intel® 965
    CPU: Core 2 Duo E4300
CPU HSF: Artic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro
    Memory: OCZ 2x1024 DDR2 PC6400
    Memory Latency: 4-4-4-12
    PSU: Antec Trio 550W
    Graphics: Radeon X1950 XT

Put everything on the motherboard tray and tried to boot it. The POST indicator showed error 8.3. Turned it all off, reseated components, tried again, same error. Following advice from a message board I started to remove components, until I was left with just the CPU and HSF. Same error. I know the PSU is good as I was using it with my Folding Rig until last week.

Have I missed something, done something wrong or is there a jumper somewhere that needs to be placed? Any suggestions, I'm lost here.

    Thanks

Surprisingly enough, I had RTFM before I posted. All three PSU connectors are in place: 24pin, 6pin and 4pin. And I know the PSU is good.

The PSU might be fine in other systems, but may have compatibility problems with your board. It wouldn't be the first time Antec had a compatibility problem with newer boards.

Its your PSU. The specs for it are : http://www.antec.com/specs/TP3_550_spe.html

Its a triple rail. It can only supply a MAX of 18Amps on the +12v lines.
Thats an issue with a 1950XT and a core2duo system.

Its a good PSU, dont get me wrong. But its not suited for your system.

Okay, thanks, I didn't mean to be rude, just getting frustrated with it all.

Is there a recommended or at least a compatible PSU list anywhere?

Loads of people will recommend different PSUs to you based on preference. But in all honesty, any 'good' brand, that offers a single rail configuration, or dual with plenty of amps will do you.

I like Tagans. Never had an issue with them.
The Cosair HX are also being rated very highly lately.
Then you have the trusty, excellent Seasonic.

Do a post in hardware for more recommendations from different people. Just stay away from Q-tec / ez-cool and other poor brands.

He means 8 pin not 6 pin

There is a standard molox connector on the board, aswell as the 4/8pin +12 lines

There is no 6 pin on the board.

That will be my mistake then I thought he meant the 6pin for his card.

Good point. It could easily be that

....so thanks to the guys at YoYoTech I'm wondering around London with a 650W Enermax. Hopefully this tripple railed PSU, with 28A on each rail, will get me past the 8.3. error.

I've taken a look at the Antec PSU's box and it does have an "SLI Ready" sticker. If this is such an easily identified issue why don't PSU manufacturers make their Amp ratings a bigger selling point rather than hiding it in small print at the back?

Why did you go for another triple rail PSU?
As previously mentioned, a triple rail PSU isn't suited for your system.

    http://www.powercolor.com/global/mai...ail.asp?id=160

The x1950XT is recommended to have 30amps on the rail supplying it. Under load, that PSU might not cut it.

    1) Because lack of information is almost as good as lying
    2) Its assumed that people who are building PC's will know about amp ratings and will check them. They shouldn't need to be in huge letters on the front

Damnit! I didn't read that. I can't believe I've been building rigs for so many years but just recently I've been caught out with PSUs, that makes it three times since this year

Oh well, hopefully it won't be a problem. I've no intention of pushing the GPU on this rig. It's a games machine for my GF and she rarely ever does anything but play MMO RPGs on it. Not gunna kill it with an FPS. Also it's a stop gap filler for 6months after which I'll upgrade, she'll get my old box and I'll move that one to the media machine when it will become a HD HTPC.

You recon I should just take it back to YoYo and get something meatier before I unwrap it?

Btw, I bought that one as the 720W model had rave reviews and that had four channels. I figured it would do (and YoYoTech had it in stock)

The 720W version still only has 3 rails (see : http://www.enermax.com.tw/english/pr...y1.asp?PrID=73)
They just use lots of confusing marketing and BS talk to make it sound better. For example, "DUAL QUAD TRIPLE + 18" - Please

While you may not push the graphics card, its power usage is huge at first booting - this is where the majority of issues happen.
The type of game (RPG vs FPS) doesnt really play that much of how much the graphics card is used - but the way the game is programmed and what features it takes advantage of.

The 1950 range of AMD/ATI are power hungry beasts, make no mistake. They recommend 30amps for a reason
They may be a bit over the top, but its your choice if you take the risk of trying - I don't know if yoyo will take it back if its not faulty.

Its simply not possible to say if it will work reliably or not without trying, there are too many factors.
