    Strange IP35 Pro Vcore happenings

    Hi All,

Some questions I hope you nice people can help me with. I've got an IP35 Pro with a Q6600 G0. After running everything with stock settings (voltages, speeds etc all on Auto in BIOS), I noticed some funny things occurring with the Vcore.

In the 1.1 bios, I think the lowest Vcore you can select is 1.2875 V. At full load, with my CPU cooler (ThermalTake Big Typhoon) on about 1000 RPM, the core temps (using latest CoreTemp with correct Tjunction) on my Q6600 were around 45-50C. Using the uGuru Utility, the Vcore was reading roughly what I said above ~ 1.25V

Now, after a little while, I noticed that my CPU temps had dropped about 8 deg C on average, and my Vcore had dropped to 1.12V (the lowest a Q6600 G0 is rated for is 1.1V, I believe). Things were still running fine, but my CPU was just a lot cooler (as you'd expect), even though it was still under full load on all four cores.

    So, I have 2 questions:

    1) Any ideas on how/why this happened?
    2) Is there any way of selecting these lower Vcore voltages in BIOS, as clearly they work just fine?

    Thanks!

    Rob

Are you sure it was under full load and this wasn't just speedstep activating?

Are you running a BIOS that proclaims support for the G0 revision? Perhaps that would unlock the lower voltages.

Yup - definitely still under full load, and it remained at the 1.1 volts until I rebooted the PC, after which it has always been back at the minimum voltage setting in the BIOS.

As to the BIOS supporting the G0 revision in particular, that's a good question. This link doesn't differentiate between the B3 and G0 steppings:

I'll see if I can find anything on some other forums...

Hmm, this article seems to think that specific G0 support in BIOS is necessary:

    Yeah, could well be.

I've turned all that off now I've OC'd my Q6600 up to 3GHz

Completely off topic... I notice you have a Hiper 580W PSU. Is that the Type-R one? Mine squeals and buzzes like crazy on my new setup and it's well annoying. Does your PSU make any annoying noises?
