Overclocking Intel E4400 on FP-IN9 motherboard

Whenever I try to do this, my computer won't boot up and I end up having to reset the CMOS. I tried setting the FSB to 1200 (up from 800), lowering the multi to 9 from 12, and upping the voltage to 1.375, which I got from reading a thread on overclocking an E4400, but it didn't work. Even just changing the FSB to about 850 to get from 2.2 to approx. 2.3 doesn't work. Anyone got any ideas?

Edit: Sorry, got the thread title wrong, I have an E4500

You are doing it too fast. Every chip is different, and every chip needs to be taken up. Keep the voltage the same, change the fsb to dram ratio so that you are underclocking the ram, even better if you can unlink them. Then, start increasing the fsb 100mhz first, then if so then up till you get a failure to post, then add more voltage.

Are you giving the northbridge some more voltage? Stick that up a notch.

Changed the NB voltage from 1.20 to 1.24 and it's booted up, hoorah! Dunno how stable it will be but the temperature doesn't seem to have changed much so I hope that's a good sign. Processor speed's gone from 2.2 to 2.48

Can I get it any higher with just the stock heatsink/fan?

Edit: Just noticed you got an E4500 as well, you using the stock heatsink/fan?

The stock cooler should be ok as long as the cpu is on stock volts. Run Orthos or similar to stress the cpu and keep an eye on the cpu temp using coretemp. I personally don't like to see my cpu cores go above 65-70 under max load whilst running orthos but thats just me.

Thanks for the info and the stress test program. Already got a program that came with my motherboard to keep an eye on temperature though, got up to 56 degrees.

Ok, so no way I'm getting 3.3 with stock then.

Re: Overclocking Intel E4400 on FP-IN9 motherboard

    Ok I'm confused now.

    My Computer > Properties tells me 'Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz 2.75GHz'
Orthos Stress test tells me 2.75GHz
    BIOS says 2.75GHz
CPUZ has told me 1.5GHz and multiplier of 6, 2.2GHz and multiplier of 9, and 2.75GHz and multiplier of 11

Is it like this because it's unstable or have I done something wrong? If it makes any difference, if I run CPUZ while running the stress test, it always tells me 2.75GHz and 11x.

    you've got C1E & EIST enabled I presume?
if so that's what they are meant to do - scale CPU output according to demand.

I got to 3ghz on stock, it ran a little toasty, its voltage rather than clock speed that heats it up. Turn your heatsink onto 100% fan all the time to keep things cooler. Also, what is your VID? it will tell you in coretemp if you download that.

Re: Overclocking Intel E4400 on FP-IN9 motherboard

Forgot about this thread. Just got an email about me being subscribed to it, so sorry for lateness.

Had it running at 3.0GHz for about a week now by only changing the NB voltage, and so far had no problems, completely stable. Gets up to 40C when gaming, idles at about 20-25. It boggles the mind that a 2.2GHz processor can easily get up to 3.0 with no trouble whatsoever, yet Intel sells it at 2.2.

Also, I got it to 3.3GHz when changing other voltages, but I got BSoD after three and a half minutes on the stress test, and it just got up to 70C, so I put it back down to 3.0.

Anyway, thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it.

Edit: If I knew how to thank you via the forum's thanking feature I would, but I can't find the button to do so, sorry.
