    IP35-E USB boot: Boot error

    Hello all.

I am currently trying to create a "livecd" on my USB flash stick and it's a success. However, when I try to boot it I simply just get the error message: Boot error

At first I thought this was because something must have happened when making the USB stick bootable but I tried it on my laptop and it works just fine, so obviously there is something wrong with either my BIOS configuration or it's my motherboard not supporting USB sticks properly for some reason...

There are a million different USB options in the boot manager and I'm pretty sure I've tried them all and the only one that yields result is USB-ZIP/LS-something. Is this the wrong configuration?

Any help would be appreciated .

    Thanks!

Re: IP35-E USB boot: Boot error

    Hi rob

I'm experiencing this same issue. I have selected the "USB/Zip-LS" (if I recall correctly) boot device as primary, and only this device gives the error "Boot error", after it has read from the USB stick (I can see the light flashing). Choosing the other two USB devices (USB-FDD and USB-CDROM (IIRC) just makes it boot from the hard drive.

Did you ever resolve this issue?

    Thanks!

if you have set it up properly it will show up as an HDD in the boot priority menu which is where you need to select it.

Re: IP35-E USB boot: Boot error

    Hi BUFF

    Thanks for your reply.
In the Hard Disk Priority menu my two SATA hard drives are listed and there's one more entry called "Bootable Add-in Cards", could this be my USB stick?
Selecting this "Bootable Add-in Cards"-entry as first priority, however, doesn't make it boot from the USB stick.
I tested the USB stick on another computer and it was able to boot from it, so it seems to be set up properly.
    Any ideas?

Re: IP35-E USB boot: Boot error

did you scroll right down in the menu box?
it should show up as something like USB-HDD0 & quite possibly with a device id/name (e.g. disgo) as well

Re: IP35-E USB boot: Boot error

    Hey BUFF

I've taken a couple of pictures of the BIOS screen to make sure that we're talking about the same menus etc.
I start by entering the "Advancdes BIOS Features"-menu which looks like this:

and from here go to the "Hard Disk Boot priority"-menu, and this looks like the following:

when you ask if I've tried scrolling down, is this the menu you're talking about?
As you can see, I need a bit more devices to be able to scroll down here , so I figured I would take some pictures to make sure I haven't misunderstood you.

It shouldn't matter which USB port I plug my USB stick into, should it?

Re: IP35-E USB boot: Boot error

It has BIOS ID 11, so it should be the latest for IP35 Pro XE.

Re: IP35-E USB boot: Boot error

that makes it even odder as I was assuming that you had an IP35-E.

This is the sort of thing that you should see .

Re: IP35-E USB boot: Boot error

That's how my USB stick shows up on the laptop I tried it on, with device name and everything.

What program do you use to write the ISO file to your USB stick? I think I will give this a try to see if this has any influence, just as a last resort.
I know that since the laptop I use recognizes the USB stick as bootable, the program I use to make bootable USB sticks is probably fine, but I'd like to try it out anyway, just to be absolutely sure this isn't the cause of the problem.

I can't seem to find any reports about the IP35 Pro XE not being able to boot from USB - thankfully - so it seems kind of strange.

Re: IP35-E USB boot: Boot error

Yay! I managed to solve this issue.
    Here's how:

In the BIOS, I went into:
Integrated Peripherals > OnChip PCI Device > USB Device Setting
where I was greeted with this screen, showing my USB stick:

To begin with, in the above screenshot where it says "HDD Mode", it said "AUTO Mode". After changing this to the "HDD Mode" that is shown in the screenshot (and rebooting), the USB stick showed up in the HDD Boot Priority list as a regular HDD, as you mentioned. Great!

    Thank you for your help.
