    AW9D-Max with Q6700

    Hi all, this is a re-post !!
I try to upgrade my CPU to Intel Quad Q6700 (2.66) in my AW9D-Max MoBo with ( 2 x 1Gb DDR2 800 corsair, ATI HD 3850 and Diamond 450w. my problem is when I turn On the PC, it restart after some minutes, even under Linux. I try 16 and 17 Bios version with no succes. note that the system work very well with the minimum setting:

    External Clock.......................... 133 MHz
    Multip .................................... x10
    N/B Starp CPU.......................... PSB 1066
    DRAM spec. (CPURAM) ........... DDR2 533 (1:1)
    133 MHz (DDR2-266)

I'm not a big overclocker but I hope to turn my CPU with a convenient setting!!
    any suggestion are welcome
    Thank's !!

    Re: AW9D-Max with Q6700

did you check the cooling on the PWM like I suggested?
Diamond is not a PSU that I'm familiar with & a quick Googling didn't help - have you a link?

The 975X chipset/mobos weren't designed for quads & you won't get a very high fsb from them with 1.
Is there an option to go to a 1333fsb strap in the BIOS (iirc at least 1 of the later betas had that option?).
Also try slowing your RAM speed or increasing voltage to it - at 1:1 CPU: RAM you are running it out of spec.

    Re: AW9D-Max with Q6700

I think either the PSU or the RAMs are the problem (a PSU problem is much more likely I think). So in my opinion you should try the following:

    1. Replace the PSU by another one, best would be a brand type with at least 450 Watts in order to be "on the sure side" as we say in Germany... ;-)

    2. Set all the frequencies & voltages in the uGuru part on auto settings. As I've experienced with both BIOS versions (v16 & v17) the board sets all the values correct for a Q6700.

BTW: Also I know this is one of the few LGA775-boards which in fact over-volts most of all CPUs (on mine the VCore in default state was set on 1.300V, but in fact the board delivered ~1.330V, so I didn't have to increase the VCore when overclocking the CPU :-)) ). So I think a undervoltage of the CPU can be excluded as a reason for your problem...

Only for my personal interest: What default CPU VCore sets the board for your Q6700? Or asked the other way around: What is the minimum VCore you can set manually? And what VCore is displayed in ABIT EQ -> Voltage monitoring?

    3. Make sure you use either the "Auto" function for the RAM latencies (in most cases I know the board sets the latencies correct), or you set the latencies manually (which means you have to know the exact specifications). IMPORTANT is to set the Command Rate on 2T or on auto - 1T never will work, you'll get a blackscreen when restarting the system.

When using the DRAM Auto values make sure the board sets all values correctly. To find out the best would be to use Everest I think.

If all this don't work use only one RAM module in the first dimm slot. I know some cases when theese boards had problems with some RAM types in DualChannel mode - but in single more they worked fine (days and days Memtesting with no error at all). But unfortunately I never had Corsair RAMs running on this Board, so with your modules I have no experience & in worst case you should do the MemTesting (both modules single & dual) on your own... :-(

Did you already use the Corsair RAM on this board before you switched to the Q6700? What CPU did you use before?

BTW: Until 2 weeks ago I had my AW9D-MAX running with a q6700@3.3GHz (=1330 MHz FSB). If I remember right NB Strap as was set (manually) on 1066, DRAM Spec was set on 667MHz (quite sure), in fact I had 825 MHz effective RAM speed. I used Muskin DDR2-800 RAM, the board was flashed with the last official BIOS (v17).

Also where I work we've sold dozens of overclocking bundles based on the AW9D-MAX, most of them setted with a far higher FSB than 1066 MHz. So in my optinion a high FSB on this board isn't a problem in general - nevertheless BUFF is right when he's saying the 975X-Boards were designed for higher FSBs (=more than 1066 MHz). But the AW9D-MAX was one of the best overclocking boards Abit ever hast built.

iirc it was possible to get well over 400 fsb on an AW9D with a dual - but not with a quad.
Unfortunately once more I mourn the passing of all the info that was on the abit USA forums ...
