[Abit AN8 SLI] Crash during Windows Vista bootup

    Motherboard: Abit AN8 SLI
Operating System: Windows Vista Business 64-bit
    RAM: 2 GB (Kingston KV400AK2/1GR x 2)

I really really appreciate any help anyone can provide!
This system has frustrated me to no end. Here is the history!

    HISTORY
I assembled this system back in 2005. I was unable to install any Windows OS on this machine. The system would generally crash during installation or barely finish installing and then my system would crash randomly, around or soon after bootup.

After a lot of tweaks to the BIOS, I finally stabilized the system completely. I wish I had noted all the changes down but it may have been a combination of my BIOS changes over several months that fixed it. The last thing I remember changing was the DRAM voltage settings and some memory timing issues. After this the system was completely stable. I never had crashes for years.

    MORE RECENTLY
Then one day my computer just stopped powering up, even to the BIOS screen. I figured it was the PSU and replaced it. This seems to have resolved at least that specific problem (it did start to power on). However while debugging this PSU issue I reset the CMOS chip a few times. I think this may have erased some of my BIOS settings that had originally stabilized the system (correct me if I am wrong). So after the new PSU, the computer powers on but can't boot into windows; the original crash issue seems to be back though it looks slightly different. Earlier it used to just reset with no BSOD. Now it gives me a BSOD. The crash happens generally around bootup and sometimes just after.

I bought a new video card and a new harddrive around this time and installed them. After installing the new video card, the crash now occurs at one fixed time during normal boot up. Safe mode generally boots me into the system but crashes soon after. I looked at my NT boot log and it tells me that certain drivers failed to load (not sure if this is the same issue or not).

[followed by mostly some of the same failures being repeated over and over]

I read some help online and figured I should reinstall some of my networking related drivers in safe mode. I removed the ISATAP driver and a few seconds later the computer crashed again. Note that it also crashes in safe mode but not as quickly as normal mode. After this crash, safe mode crashes a bit sooner now so I never have enough time to go and try to uninstall any of the drivers. This may or may not fix the problem anyhow.

Frustrated, I tried to install Windows Vista again on the newest SATA drive. Once again, after copying all the files over during installation (during the copy process it is always remarkably stable), it crashed when it was almost towards the end of the installation when windows was "installing" and "configuring".

I have a feeling there are two ways to fix the problem --

    1) Tweak my BIOS settings
This fixed my problem once and should fix it again I feel. But what should I change? I can't remember what I changed in the past. Any tips?

    2) Try memtest
I can't do this since my machine never boots into windows really (or in safe mode, for about a minute or less).

I appreciate your suggestions tremendously! I would really really love to get this machine working again.

    THANKS!!!
