    AB9 installing windows problem

Hi there my system specs are:

    C2D 6300 (not overlcocked)
    Abit AB9
    1Gb generic Ram @ 800Mhz
    420W thermaltake PSU
    Geforce 7950gt 512mb
Samsung SPoint 250gb SATAII 8mb HDD
    Lite-on IDE DVDRW

My problem is that after having put it together I cannot install windows! The SATA HDD is on SATA port 4 according to the bios, but the IDE DVD drive is is not recognised by the bios. However after the initial POST screen a message saying ODDO: Liteon DVRW........etc appears in green, then with windows XP in the drive it starts the intial installation setup. When it gets the stage when it would normally reboot the machine, it comes up with a BSOD. The problem is that at the moment i currently dont have a FDD attached as i cant find one at home.

I have searched google and it sounds like it may be that the JMICRON driver needs updating, but i cant seem to update it!!

The BSOD error message i get is:

    0x0000007B

Any help would be much appreciated as I have so far wasted my entire Xmas Eve setting this up and really dont want the rest of my Xmas spent trying to sort this out
Well, I can cut it in half!

You need to install the jmicron drivers from the floppy disk. You won't be able to install windows without it.

Make sure the SATA drive is running on the onboard controller (ie not JMicron), and use an IDE-SATA convertor for the optical drive if you have one (again on the onboard controller) that should remove the need to use drivers via floppy.

Shocked you managed to use an IDE CDrom to install windows though, couldn't get the damn thing to work at all!

From my experience if the JMicron is in IDE mode u can install windows without the F6 driver install, just make sure that the DVDRW is selected as boot drive in the bios, should be named specifically rather than just DVDRW, i.e NECDVDRW6.... sorry Sean, not one to disagree with the expert

I have since bought a SATA DVDRW and now run everything in AHCI mode, as such it requires the F6 driver install

The Jmicron IDE controller can only run in IDE mode. It doesn't matter if you select the correct boot device. Windows XP will not be able to see the optical drive correctly without the driver thats why it blue screens. Some drives will allow to install windows but it all depends on the make and model.

dont want to detract from greektony's prob but I do not have a floppy drive in my PC and installed XP fine with an IDE optical drive before I recently bought a SATA optical drive (and a new floppy for F6 driver install). I had a standard XP SP2 CD

Installed XP onto SATA hard drive as well with my 16x LG dvdrw. Then just installed the Jmicron drivers afterwards.

As I said some optical drives will allow XP to be installed. But because there is no official list of drives that work the driver should always be used to increase stabilty.

Can you explain why some cd/dvd rom drives work fine (ie without drivers) and some don't?
Logically one would assume the brand/make/model of the optical would have no bearing as to whether windows would install correctly or not.
The drivers are for the controller, NOT for whatever drive is stuck onto it. To the computer, a CD-Rom is a CD-Rom.

If you were to install windows on a non native controller then yes drivers ARE required, however pretty sure on the 2 machines I've used which run the JMicron controller, drivers were not required to get either up and running.
Maybe that was down to the type of optical drive used tho......

possibly because the drive itself has a controller - therefore differences could come down to which internal controller the drive uses?

Then the same case would apply to ALL motherboards and ALL optical drives which clearly isnt the case.
