New ABIT AB9 PRO MoBo looks dead.

    Hi,

I am building a new PC with the ABIT AB9 PRO MoBo. The MoBo is installed in a ANTEC Sonata II Case with 450 W PSU. I am having a peculiar problem since I switched on power to this MoBo. When I turn on the power all I get is the 5VSB LED glowing red and the POST display on the MoBo first showing "2" and then moving on to "00". Apart from these 2 things there is no activity no fan, no display, no HDD activity... Nothing.

This issue can be seen even when working with bare minimum system config after stripping all the peripherals:

    1. Mobo and Core2Duo E6600 and CORSAIR TWINX 2048MB DDR2 800 memory
    2. Mobo and Core2Duo E6600
    3. Mobo and nothing else

All the above combinations show the same result. My final config will have 1 PATA HDD, 1 DVD-ROM, 1 FDD, 4 SATA, 1 NVIDIA PCI-X GPU.

I am completely lost at this stage and contemplating on returing to AMAZON. But if I am making some kind of a silly mistake then I would like to correct and get my dream system rolling.

    Thanking in anticipation.

Things look bad - No beeps means...

One thing I forgot to mention is that I never heard a beep when I switched on the power. According to the BEEP spec for AB9 PRO it means:

1.) No beep at all - this means your motherboard is dead, either due to a defective or underpowered power supply, poorly seated CPU or RAM, or a dead-on-arrival board

I have seen the same behaviour even when I had removed the CPU and RAM. Am I right in assuming that it means either PSU is bad or a Dead MoBo.

Any idea how to go about quickly identifying the root cause? I do not want to kill my new MoBo if my PSU is defective.

    Thanking in advance.

Try clearing CMOS if you haven't done so already.

Have you got all the appropriate power connecters plugged in? INcluding the Molex one?

I did clear the CMOS and connect the 24 PIN POWER connector as well as the 4 PIN MOLEX.

    Thanks.

If you see the same problem when removing the CPU/Ram it doesnt necesarily (*sp) mean the mobo is dead. Could also be a CPU issue. If ram was faulty you'd probably get post beeps to suggest it.
Try re-seating the CPU (if you haven't already) and boot with no ram in the machine. If you still get the same, then its probably a CPU or mobo problem. You can also try booting without the GFX installed (ie just CPU installed) the machine will still boot but you'll get 2 beeps (which means no GFX) if the board is able to boot.
Sounds at the moment like a cpu or mobo problem though - are you able to test the cpu in another board or test another CPU in your board?

    Unhappy

I tried it with just the CPU and still no beep or any other change. One thing I noted was that none of the fans were running including that of the PSU.

    Thanks.

Just re-read your post - you are pressing the power button on the front of the machine aren't u? Double check the power switch is plugged into the write pins on the motherboard

    LOl at above so true.

However i VERY MUCH doubt that its the CPU, in 15 years of computing I have only known 2 DEAD intel cpu's. Intel cpu's are so relialbe so I dontthink its that.

Have you tried the power switch as the over users have noticed. Have you tried isntalling the p4 connecor.

IMPORTANT NOTE: WHEN building a NEW PC ALwys do a DESK build first, I.E build the computer OUTSIDE of thecase. That way its easier to track faults.

    cheers

    Gilgamesh,

Thanks for the suggestion. I hope to get my replacement hardware soon. I will build it outside with minimum of the hardware. Any suggestions on what exactly is the minimum system? Here are the options let me know which of them make sense:

    1. MoBo, PSU, CPU, MoBo speakers
    2. MoBo, PSU, CPU, MoBo speakers, Graphic card
    2. MoBo, PSU, CPU, MoBo speakers, Graphic card, Memory

I was thinking of going in that order unless memory is a must. I have returned my MoBo and CPU to be replaced what are the chances of defective Mem breaking my MoBo? I do not want to take a chance of loosing my MoBo if the Mem was at fault.

    Thanks.

No you dont needs speakers at all

This is what you need just to see if the pc posts. Motherboard , MEM ,CPU GPU
and nothing else. Ifyou wish to install windows whislt on a desk build try adding a cd rom and hdd

When you give power to the board its in "standby" mode. It sit's with 2 LED's saying "00" like you are seeing.
You then need to turn the PC on. Refer to page 2-7 in your manual. "PWR (Pin 6-8) Connects the power switch cable of chassis front panel" this is where you plug in the power switch. You use this to then turn the PC on.
If you dont have a power switch connected, then there's no way to actually boot the machine.

    Happy at last.

    Thanks Highland3r,

I tried that and it did not work. I checked the switch the switch was working fine but the board was not responding.

I just now received my new board and am happy to say this one worked like a charm. I have 1 FDD, and 1 CD & HDD attached to my IDE connector. I have already succeeded in installing Ubuntu (Efty edge 6.10) and Open SUSE 10.2 (X86_64) on it. Thanks to the forum I was able to keep myself sane in the whole process.

I am just waiting for my XP Professional to show up so that I can do the dual boot installation.

Yesterday I got 4 SATA delivered. Hope to do the RAID 5 installation and use it for my precious photos and videos.

    Thank you all.

Let me know if I can help some one with Linux installations as I have at least 2 installations under my belt.
