NSK1380 can not mount HDD's vertically

    Hi Tinkerers,

I've bought one of these antec 'Cube' cases NSK1380 wel over a month ago.
After unboxing I started assembling my rig. Since I am using it for a storage server I need to use all drive bays. There are 3x3.5" bays in this case. One is horizontally stacked on top of the Optical and the others are one each side vertical hanging down from the chassis.

There's even special thermal tape in place so its pretty clear where and how to mount the 2 extra HDD's but it just won't fit. When the screw holes line up with the standard mount holes on the HDD the harddisk will sit partly on top of flange/ridge that is used to weld the ODD/HDD1 bracket against the vertical mount bracket. So in other words it can't sit flat against the surface but leans over touching other parts of the chassis.

Another thing I noticed is that there's rubber grommets included for mounting 1 HDD horizontally but no solution for the other drives are in my kit.

I've created a call with Antec but disapointingly more that one month later I still haven't gotten an explanation, solution or any technical feedback.

I am really curious if anyone has this case and/or has found the same issue !?

    Hi pvdven777,

Did you mount the hard drive vertically on the side of the 5.25 cage.

Here is the instruction manual (look at page 3-4).

    http://www.antec.com/pdf/manuals/NSK1380_manual_EN.pdf

Please let me know if this helps.

    Regards,
    Antec

    Hi,

    Thanks for your response.
I've tried getting clues from the manual but no luck.
Also there really are only 2 ways to mount the drives (bottom of drive towards the outside or bottom towards the inside) and neither way will fit properly.

Maybe these images will help explain a little better :

What I see is that you can mount them, but you are concerned that they don't sit straight, right? I would go to the hardware store and get a few washers to put between the HD and bracket so it doesn't ride on the edge where the metal overlaps, that way it will sit straight. Antec was probably thinking the tape would be thick enough to keep it level with the overlap.

    Hiya Hardrocky.

    Thanks for your reply !
10 out of 10 score for you for understanding the actual problem.
10 out of 10 score also for guessing what I had already done as a temporary workaround !

I used some of the rubber washers that are included for horizontal mount however because I want to minimize risk of damage to the thermal tape for the moment.

It would be decent though (and much appreciated as well) for Antec to acknowledge the oversight and help me find a proper solution dont you think ? I'm not trying to be difficult bu I was hoping for some better alternative solution(s) in which the harddrive sits flat against the chassis as opposed to on top of some washer. This because I don't want to create some possible cause for vibrations.

I have considered drilling the holes bigger but firstly that would void warranty and secondly it looks like there may not be enough clearance to make that work (+ harddisk touching the side again could cause/transfer vibration).

Admittedly I am somewhat shocked about the fact that this can happen (all my harddrives are the same dimensions so a quick check at design time should have easily uncovered this).
Also I am a bit disappointed how long it is taking to get any feedback from Antec tech. support.
The response to this topic is the only thing substantial I got.

Other than this little issue though the record should reflect that I really like this case. It was exactly what I needed. Quiet, compact as can be but still (theoretically ;o) ) allowing me to mount several harddrives and an optical.

    Hi pvdven777,

I apologize for the delay in responding. I was getting more information on this problem from the customer support team. Do you know what type/brand of hard drive you using? I spoke with customer support regarding this problem and they said it might be the type of hard drive you are using. Some hard drivers are larger/thicker in size than others. We could somehow get you a replacement cage but it might just end up being the same problem.

    Regards,
    Antec

    Hi,

The currently used drives are Western Digitals WD10EADS (A.K.A. 1TB Caviar Green)

If put a ruler to it and sized it up against other brands and types of drives and I can't find any difference but please be my guest to check it out!

    Thanks for your effort.

Ok, so it's been well over a month. Any ideas yet ?

Also still haven't got any feedback on my support ticket.

Can't go back to the shop with the product either now since I've been relying on manufacturer support for too long now ........

    Hi Pvdven777,

Where are you located? I think we might need a cage replacement. I would suggest resubmitting a ticket and request for a cage replacement.

Re: NSK1380 can not mount HDD's vertically

Just found out the original ticket has been closed without any reason or feedback added to it.
Once I found out I immediately submitted a new ticket referring to the old one.
    Trouble Ticket ID: 211436

Not sure if you can access those but I will add a comment referring to this forum post as well.

I am currently situated in The Netherlands.

If all else fails I guess another cage would be a potential alternative. Even if that has the same problem then at least I could try to fix/modify one myself without risk of ending up with nothing at all to fall back on.

    Pvdven777,

Thanks for submitting a new ticket. Your original ticket was probably closed because it has been a month. An Antec representative should give you a response within 2-3 business days.

    Antec

    Hi Pvdven777,

I apologize for the delay. I would recommend emailing our Antec EU RMA department at europe.rma @antec.com (no spaces between rma and @). In the email, I would provide your name, the problem you are having, and the ticket number. They should respond to your question within 24-48 hours.

If for some reason you still have not gotten a response from them within 3 business days, please let me know and I'll personally work with you on this issue.

    thank you for your patience.

    Antec

Ok, so after some time now I got a reply from Antec EU support.

Their conclusion is that they don't see any immediate solution and will have to liase with manufacturing first now to look at the problem in more detail.

Lets see what's next. Will keep you posted !

Re: NSK1380 can not mount HDD's vertically

Okay. After some more deliberation with Antec's European support I now have confirmation that a new drive cage is getting shipped.

It is expected to arrive within 3~5 working days.

I hold my breath. Will it be a perfect fit or wil it end up facing the angle grinder ?
