P183 V3 front panel audio problems

I've just built a system and I can't get the front panel audio connections to work. I'm using a Gigabyte Z68 UD3H motherboard which has the standard 10 pin HD audio connector on the motherboard. However the only sound I get is a buzzing sound (the exact same as if you were to connect the ring on a TRS connection) I've tried both the AC97 and HDA connection with no luck. The grounded sound doesn't not change when the system is powered down so I assume it must be a ground loop or a bad connection in the case wiring?

I have tested the motherboard connector with another case front panel audio connection and it works fine.

    Any ideas?

    Hi thedonutman,

Do you have the chance to include a picture of the two HD AUDIO as well as AC97 connectors of your P183 V3? These are standard parts with defined wiring by Intel standards. I could imagine that one lead to the connectors is not isolated properly and shorts out somewhere. So please carefully check the wiring as well if possible.

Another idea is to try to connect the HD AUDIO cable to another known good mainboard if available. This would instantly confirm issues with the front panel ports of your P183 V3.

Let us know how it goes.

    Best regards,

I checked the connections with a multimeter. There is continuity between the ring of the mic and the ring of the headphone port. Should that be correct?

Going by this particular pinout and a multimeter:

    There's a connection between 2 and 4 as well as a connection between 6 and 7

And looking at the connections to the front panel:

    Headphones (TRS)

    T: 9
    R: 5
    S: 2+4

    Microphone (TRS)

    T: 1
    R: 3
    S: 2+4
