There is no way they were ever going to release a tablet. Its not something apple are into. And there is already a mac authorized one out there in the modbook.

Don't see how you can say that considering the success of the iPhone and iPod Touch interface. A tablet Macbook would be a natural extension of this.

Re: Welcome to the new MacBook Air

I wonder how much the 80gb 4200rpm drive will bottleneck the laptop, presumably their showing off the SSD with its lightning sppeds. Anyone also know which C2D chips they are using?

Sure look nice I have to admit, but i've paid £450 less for my m1330 which packs much more of a punch.

So if you wanna use the remote disk thing you need to walk around with a setup disk, hmmmmm very clever apple; hopefully you could download the setup files also.

WOW you can watch movie wirelessy over itunes - i can do that with my eee!

Why are you bothering to look in the Apple Mac forum section then?

Re: Welcome to the new MacBook Air

There is rumours of an apple touch screen tablet coming out later this year - although supposdly set back by some problems. Appleinsider usually turns out to be right about these things.

I wonder who out of all the apple-bashers on these very forums have actually taken the time to get to know the OS. I'm not some apple plant by any means, I have a MacBook, a vista based acer laptop, and an XP machine. OS X is the weapon of choice i'm afraid, every time.

Re: Welcome to the new MacBook Air

Depends what you consider expense when you compare them.

The sony is lighter, has an optical drive, almost double the battery life with the option of additional batteries i'm sure..
    But, the air has C2D..

Swings and round abouts really, but you have to consider ultimately what this type of laptop is used for and who buys them. Sony have the right compromise.

What you also need to remember is that sony make two more laptops which could be considered competitors. The TZ and SZ series.

EDIT: just read that it only has one usb port, I struggle with two on my dell :Z

Re: Welcome to the new MacBook Air

    Very nice IMO, so thin!

Something I might consider if the price point was a little lower as my MBP just isn't cutting it anymore and I need something more powerful so it won't be long before the MacPro arrives and I'll just want my laptop for surfing etc. Shame about the graphics card really as I run ArKaos fairly often from my laptop with DMX control

Re: Welcome to the new MacBook Air

It's got mono speakers which is a major drawback. Much better idea to look as the new Asus EEE range.

I think the start of the show has to be the new Apple TV product.

Re: Welcome to the new MacBook Air

mono speakers don't really bother me, because laptop speakers are all pretty tinny and crap anyway - I'd use headphones or plug into external speakers if I was going to be listening to anything where sound quality was vital..

Battery - I can see the issue, but in all honesty, having two mac laptops over about 6 years I've never needed to replace a battery - I guess that depends on usage patterns, but it wouldn't be a huge issue for me.

The only downsides for me really is the price (apple us/uk pricing strikes again..), and the 2gb ram - ideally I'd *like* the option to go to 4gb, but it's not critical.

I can see how it's not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but then that's what the MacBook/Pro are there for..

Didn't see the mono speakers, is the headphone port stereo?

I don't see it happening for several reasons. Firstly iPhone/ Touch have to be touch screen as to put a keyboard on them would effect their use. On a laptop not having a keyboard would put a lot of people off. Secondly I don't think S Jobs likes tablets. Thirdly the modbook is already out there for those that want a mac tablet. Apple get a nice cut with no risk of a failing product. A win win for them.

I simply don't believe the modbook would have been allowed to exist with apple working on one of their own.
