im thinking of moving intot he world of mac, (looking to get a 12 inch powerbook at the mo)
and im just wondering what level of compatibility OS X has with opensource stuff linux stuff? eg the type of stuff thats on sourceforge etc.
i know its based on unix/freebsd, of which the former im familiar with. I was just wondering how much of that basis it retained.

You'll have to look for mac specific ports because of the use of a non x86 processor.
IIRC most stuff like that is command line because os x isn't in any way x-windows compatible..

is there a fair amount of freeware for the mac, or am i gonna have to pay for everything
im talking about messenger clients / irc / winrar and all those type of things.

what comes with the system (software wise) will depend on what system you get and what region you are in as there are differences between US and Europe machines...the best way to see what is included is to go to your regional Apple Store online, select the product you are interested and d/l the product data sheet and that will tell you what comes with the unit

Stoo, the next revision of OSX, Panther, is set to ship with a stable/proper (if you know what I mean, proper installer and...support...and stuff) version of X Free 86....use umm whassit called dselect at the moment. I did! But the install I did doesn't work well with 10.2 (black cursors) and I'm not up enough on the hard side of things to be able to sort out all the dependencies so I just use Aqua!

i take it , there exists firmware etc, to change the region. Me kinda wants region free.
