Difference between 1st & 2nd gen iPod mini?

How do you tell the difference between the 4GB 1st and 2nd generation minis? I know the battery life is 8hour compared to 18 but beyond running a battery test is there a quick and easy way to check on the iPod?

On the 2nd gen, the printing on the click wheel matches the colour of the iPod mini itself, eg a pink one will have pink text.

This doesn't help for the silver ones though.
