    Problem with Lacie External HD

I'm trying to set up my new Lacie firewireHD.When I try to backup using SilverKeeper it comes up "System Error (-1712) backup incomplete. Nothing has backed up.
Whilst trying to back up the screen went black with only the spinning disk symbol. I could not get out of this and had to turn it off. I'm glad to say all was back to normal when I turned it on again, I thought I had lost everthing. What was that all about?

    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks.

I'm not a huge Lacie fan - my 500GB d2 BigDisk is now a paperweight because of its tendency to lose its partitions. Personally, if it recurs I'd be looking at RMAing it, but good luck getting Lacie to talk to you about it...

I DID wonder whether the fact that it got hotter than the Earl of Hell's jockstrap while running might have something to do with it - what's the temp on yours like?

I don't really wish to try the Lacie again unless they can explain what the prob is. This is because the crash it caused was so SERIOUS I don't wish to compromise my iBook.
    Does this sound reasonable?

Look, if it's new, it's unfit for purpose, then take it back to the place where you bought it, receipts, box, the lot and press for a full refund. If they offer a swap, don't take it unless they're offering something that you want. And yes, utterly reasonable.
