    Purchased a Dual 2.7 G5...

I've got a friend interested in my 1.8Ghz G5...so that'll be sold once I get back to Leeds in September...

Last evening I placed an order for the following system:

    • Dual 2.7GHz PowerPC G5
    • 512MB DDR400 SDRAM (PC3200) - 2x256
    • 250GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
    • 16x SuperDrive Double-Layer (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    • ATI Radeon X850 XT w/256MB DDR SDRAM
    • 56K V.92 Modem
    • Bluetooth Module
    • Apple Keyboard + Apple Mouse

Gonna be properly giving it some life in December. It'll be delivered in two weeks as this is a BTO order...

    Should be interesting.

Will you be upgrading the memory when you get it?

Can you post some SETI/Boinc figures when you get it as that should be FAST! (It has a built in benchmark, but if you run some units, you should be able to get the average completion time, and on that system it should do 2 units at one time)

Hehe Pyle, you are a funny guy But I seriously doubt that possible...I don't think VPC allows you to game in it...(must check). Still, WoW and such should fly, but that isn't the reason I got this system in the first place. If you want hardcore gaming you need something running Windows (sadly) and these days my gaming is limited to MGS3 and other console titles...I will probably be getting back in to WC3: Frozen Throne/WoW sometime soon...

Dougal, SoddingMike - rofl Ok, I initially left the modem out but thought 'what the hell'...if ADSL ever dies I *would* have a backup. Even tho I'd probably switch to GPRS..as slow in the end...Ah well, the modem cost peanuts. On this same topic, I may end up adding an Airport Extreme card at some point if the need arises, but highly unlikely as this machine will need the full bandwidth that 100BaseTx has to offer.

Joshwa, I'm throwing out the RAM/HDD once I get back from England (in Dec). This is cause I have a 300GB in my 1.8 G5 (that I'm keeping), buying a new 300GB Maxtor and probably 2Gig (in 1GB matched pairs). I may load it with 4GB in the end...Also moving the FW/USB2 card to this machine along with a M-Audio Rev 7.1 soundcard.

I'll post a few figures once it gets here but those will be @ the stock specs...

I'm like pretty sure it'll come with the oldstyle. Will be selling off the mouse (new from the kit, sealed) with the 512MB RAM (2x512) for say £30inc worldwide and the £250GB hdd....

I might wait a bit before I decide to buy this mouse, for now my mx500 will suffice...would like to actually try it before deciding...stuff can look great on paper...

Ahh, the £2600 question - well, my thinking was as follows. Fact: Apple agent in Sri Lanka sells a max of 5 G5s per month and all to the corporate sector. I'm like their only customer to have purchased 2 (like walk in and order, not via a company). With this in mind one can see that is has a second hand value of £0.00 here, or if it DID sell I'll get ripped off (badly). So this machine was purchased with longevity in mind (point 1).

As for tasks, once paired with my 23" Apple Display, it'll be working alot with Photoshop, webdev (CSS/PHP etc), server tasks for the office (downstairs) and personal stuff, including leeching a fair share of the net (torrents).

I'm also taking a keen interest in trying to bridge the gap between Mac OSX & development of embedded systems. Currently albeit a few tools the bulk of 'em require Windows, as all the IDEs are code for Windows specifically. Why? Most of the older programmers connect via the serial/lpt ports but with USB programmers around an OS X solution seems quite attractive! For this task I'll be spending a fair time learning to work with Cocoa, and hope I make some progress when time permits.

Finally, I'll have a machine that'll be able to handle Final Cut Pro HD, gonna have some fun with it now...

That's pretty much it. Work, Coding, Fun... ohh WoW as well

Mike, as you're a student, can I ask how you afford all this stuff? Do you have a decent (is that possible whilst being a student?!) paying part time job or do your parents fund things?

And who the hell would sink £2.6 grand into a computer anyway for messing around on. Sure if you were earning money for stuff, but as a toy, you could have got some much cooler stuff for that kinda cash.

Oakey: I do tons of odd jobs (contracts for clients on the engineering side) and then some.

Caged: This isn't primarily for messing around and will become the backbone of another company I'm starting up...

Odd jobs such as? Your website said you had a company until you finished your A Levels. What did that involve?

How does a computer become the backbone of a company?

During my O/A's I was pretty much helping startup companies get their 'systems' running. The usual basic IT stuff, it was fun for a while. Since Uni I've fallen in love with Embedded Systems design and that's what I currently specialize in. So what is this embedded stuff you ask? Think of it as coding chips to solve a problem as efficiently as possible, whilst allowing room for 'change', at the same time this 'system' will interface with other circuits etc...

Backbone wise it'll be what I'll be developing a lot of the code on. Don't want to give out too much as this is a large scale project that I'll be working on after Uni
