    sounds odd i know

but i need to cut the flow of traffic down on a certain port from maxing my connection down to a slow trickle as others in my family use the line

I googled for "Net Limiter OSX" coz I've used Net Limiter for windows to do the exact same thing.

I was able limit a certain ports traffic, between certain hours etc, or certain speed limits etc.
So I just looked for a similar thing for OSX

    doh!!

    hmm, back to drawing board.

There are a lot of people talking about using ipfw commands....
if you google for "netlimiter osx" or "net limiter osx" etc you'll find various threads.

    Taken from the Carrafix FAQ

2.7. Download rate limiting is not very sharp and very sensitive, why ?

To limit download rate, CFx acts on uploaded ACK packets emitting. This technique is a first step to a higher quality download rate limitation. That's why to cap downloads, upload must be capped too.
For the moment, the Download slider is **VERY** sensitive, you should use a tool like NetMonitor to monitor your download rate (free software !) and move the slider very slowly.

That looks like it will work, but involves cmd line playing with ipfw etc.

    Same idea

    Both use "dummynet"....

ie you creat "pipes" and tell which apps to use which pipes....

ie 2x 1mbs pipes and you have 9apps using pipe1 and 1 app uses pipe2 etc
