apparently only lasts 18months, then to buy a replacement (from apple) costs more than an ipod itself!

Saw that There are cheaper equivalents of $55 out there tho
Apple have changed there policy now...
$99 to get a new battery from apple.
You can also buy Apple Care for $59 within the first year and then you're covered etc.
Dunno how true that is, wouldn't surprise me if it is.
You can get replacement batteries from everythingipod.co.uk for £50 anyhow.

I have to admit my ipod battery is slighly wierd. I can leave it on charge all night then when I check when I wake up it is only half full. The battery meter seems to always jump around the place which sucks. If my battery breaks I'll just take back to JL.

I have a spare battery already
How do you open an ipod without severely harming the poor thing to get to the battery though?
i think its a credit card or similar between the chrome and the plastic, and just angle the prongs out the way so the back can be reomoved

hmm... surgery for my 3rd gen in 12 months time then
Not sure if this has been confirmed but I've heard that apple might have changed the type of batteries which they are going to to use in the future. Maybe this mean the batteries might last longer.

Actually the batteries last less time apparently as they are smaller and store less mAh of power but still at the same voltage. Wonder if it was a good trade-off for the other features of the new Gen3 iPod...Originally posted by Rory

It's a shame that such a class piece of kit has such a major flaw. What's the point in having 4 weeks worth of music if it only has 8 hours of battery play time? ROFL. Just bought myself a NETMD which has over 100 hours playtime.
You can tell that most of the sales of the iPod this Christmas are due to the advertising and product placement though. People who would never have considered an Mp3 player before and have no real interest in anything to do with computers are suddenly wanting them. Expect a few up for sale in the coming months when people fail to read the specs and wonder why it won't work on their Windows 98 machine.
