CRX, good choice. If you need any advice on them give me a shout as I own one (the exact model you want as well).Originally posted by sparky191
I've also driven a few Mrk3 8v and to be honest while they had lots of torque none of them felt that fast, even off the line. Certainly none of those Golfs felt nowhere as fast as my next car a Mrk2 CRX 1.6 -16vCRX or even my mates Mrk MR2. The 16v Mrk3 Golf is meant to be a lot better, but I never got to drive one.

What makes you think that increased airflow gives you better combustion? It was the swirl design in the head that gives it good combustion. If good airflow gave good combustion we'd all have 5v engines by now, but even F1 cars still only have 4V per cylinder. 5V is a very debatable improvement as it gives a less that optimal spark plug position and squish area.Originally posted by Richie
Tis true... The Vauxhall 20XE (2.0 16v engines) and some of the C20LET's (2.0 16v Turbo engines) suffered from porous heads allowing water and oil to mix in some instances.
As Trig hinted at - the 20XE engine was a fantastic engine for 2 main reasons -
A) - The engine was designed by Cosworth
B) - It was designed to be a turbo charged engine but GM thought they knew better and didnt put turbos on it till later.
These 2 facts (mostly B) gave the engine immense airflow properties allowing for near perfect combustion as well as having a bulletproof block and the design (IMHO) hasnt been bettered since.
Regarding the GTi - Volkswagen HAVE screwed up with it. The car is too lardy and slow compared to before. The only cars in that range you mention above that are "proper" quick are the R32 and 4-Motion.

Actually I meant my next car after the Golf GTI I had. The CRX has been and is long gone. Bit of a sad story. Someone drove into the side of me out of junction when I was turning into it. He claimed off me the muppet. But no claim was paid out for either party. Grrrr. The the repairs, (if I could have got someone to fix it) would have been 2-3K. Then shortly after that (one night out of 3yrs I had the car) I forgot to put the steering lock on it (the full wheel jobbies) some scumbags broke in and broke the lock, the steering lock and the ignition. Couldn't source a lock, column, or ingnition lock 2nd hand. Honda wanted about 800 for all the parts. Then the insurance renewal came in at 3K and I just got rid of it. It got traded in as a scrapage car for some blandmobile. Sad end. This country is a car hostile enviroment.Originally posted by hotpurple

3k for insurance? Painfull.
I have an immobiliser on my car, so (hopefully) it won't ever be nicked, but you never can tell.

The first released mk5 GTI will be a 2.0 Turbo FSI engine producing 200Bhp.and have about 10Bhp
so in another year or two they'll probably up it like they did with the mk4 115Bhp...150Bhp... 180Bhp etc etc... maybe even a new 4Motion and then the R36 too.
Its bigger inside...I know that much.its not as big either from the pic i've seen
Yes, the wheelbase has grown, as has the track. So the Golf gets bigger yet again. In another 10 years it'll be bigger than the current passat!!!

I dont think its actual dimensions have altered much... the person who designed it designed another very good car (and ive totally forgot what it was).... anywayz, yes.. longer wheelbase and the inside (probably aint ACTUALLY bigger) uses the space better etc
the focus!

Thats it!
and U KNOW how well that handles!
and they kept the C.. (C?? ... eeek whats the letter) pillar so its still got the mk1 trademark thing
Yes, it handles very well, but aparantly the golf doesn't. Which is a shame. Aparantly the steering lacks feedback and is too light.

The Rover K series engine is damned fast and is used in Caterhans, Morgans, TVRs and The Lotus Elise (in various sizes). Considering your Golf isn't a 1.4 and by the sounds of it you've modded it - I don't really think it had a chance.I recently raced a MG ZR 105, which uses the Rover 1.4 103PS engine and ... HAHAHAHAHA its slow as hell... its NOT .. I repeat NOT faster than a 8v OR a 16v.
My ZR 105 was the damned fast - but you still have to remember that it's only a 1.4. I'll point you to the start of the thread which compares this to a 2.0 Golf that's almost a 50% bigger engine. The Golf should waste it's skinny little arse.
But it doesn't
..ontop of that how do you know he was really going for it? a 2 litre golf is a far more expensive car than a 1.4 rover, and doubtful that its much faster, its just larger.
incidentally - anyone seen those mg express's? look fab
