    Tyre Ratings...

Guys i've been trying to find what i'm supposed to be running Speed rating wise. (octavia Vrs 1.8i on 02 plate)

I know i've got 205/50/17 at the moment, but i've not been able to find Continentals Super Contact 2's in W's like they are on my car at the moment.

Bearing in mind W's are rated for 165mph?, and V's are 150 does it matter, considering i'm never even getting close to those speeds.

Spoke to a guy at a local tyre place that said it might invalidate my insurance if I used V's instead of W's but i've been through my own technical manual for my car and can find no place where W's are insisted on.

    Thoughts/Help please?

Why don't you call your insurance company? They will be able to give you a definative answer.

The guy at the tire place obvously has a vested interest in selling more expensive W rated tires, and as you say, you are very unlikely to drive at 150mph, let alone 165.

    This is what autodata says

    rim size: 7x17
    tyre size: 205/50/17 89W

I don't know the law, but if they were made with w's, maybe you should stick with them.
I agree that v's would be safe though.

147mph is its rated top speed, which i guess why its rated as W, you don't want to have it that close.

The reason i asked the question is i'm having trouble sourcing the W's and the V's of those continentals are easy to get. Almost like the W's don't exist. Tried all the online tyre places i know (e-tyres, blackcircles etc)

    mytyres.co.uk owns all.

just get the one below not only does your car not even go 150 but you wont ever get to 150 as it would take ten mins from 140.

just get the ones below it makes almost no differnce, i think i have v as std on my car and book top speed is 143 soooo it should be fine

and also get some f1 eagles they are SOOOOO good.

I've always had continentals in 4 years of having the car, i'll be sticking to them.

Sure if i had all 4 corners to change i might but not at the moment.

Funny you should ask this, as a chap at work has been looking for tyres for his Landy.. now that doesn't go very fast when he's competing, but his manual states that the top speed of his motor is 90mph, and the insurance company has told him that he must have tyres that are rated for 90mph or his insurance is invalid, and what's more, in order to get an event insured, all competitor's vehicles must be road legal, ergo, have the correct speed rated, road legal tyres fitted.

Do Michelin do a Pilot Primacy of any kind in the size and rating you need?

    hmmmmm

Reinforced tyre walls....now THAT'LL drive ok

According to Michelin's data, you had an optional set of tyres on....slightly lower profile than standard (though I don't know if thats hard core fact...but I think Skoda have fitted Michelin's at the factory )

That michelin stuff is interesting. Always had conti's on the car tho so will be sticking with them and just checked with the insurance (direct line) and they have no problem with V's.
