    306 D-Turbo 'R' reg

My parents have agreed to give me their current R reg Peugeot 306 1.9 D-Turbo Meridien when they get a new car next year. It will be my first car and I will be 21 by the time that I get the car.

They have had it since new so I know it has a good service record.

The cheapest I can find insurance on this car is currently £1400 TPFT with tesco, anyone know any decent ways to bring this price down? I think it will be a great first car for myself.

I will have some minor bodywork to sort out, namely where chavs have thrown stones at the car

I could possibly do with changing the alloy wheels for something a little nicer (not chav) any recommendations?

Plus is there anything else I should take into consideration when I get the 306?

Agreed on that but they have had the car from new with no issues at all, other than the standard changing of break discs, tires etc. (plus its free)

306? Love or Hate it sorta car.

The 1.9d is meant to be one of the best lumps they put in it, and it has a fair few supporters on this forum (moby, zakky)

    £1400tpft? Ouch.

Ways to bring the insurance down. Firstly, have it in your name (the car and the insurance) If someone else owns the car and you are insuring it, they whack up the premium. Also, if you don't insure the car in your name, then you will not get the benefit of accumulating NCB.

Secondly, Add one of your parents as a named driver. This kinda assumes they haven't got a really bad accident history (ie 3+ crashes in the last 5 years), but adding them lowers the risk.

Thirdly, are all the details correct? Don't under/overstate the value of the car, if its garaged, tell them, if not, tell them where it is parked, ie on the driveway instead of the street, in a secured car park during the day (If it is, don't lie).

Fourthly, have you considered doing any driver training? Insurance companies like advanced drivers, because usually they have less crashes. They also like Pass Plus if you haven't got any ncb. If you have driven other peoples cars for any length of time, might be worth mentioning that, as experience counts nearly as much as no claims.

Oh, and one last thing, where did you get the quotes from? The internet? Even in this day and age, phoning around is still the best way to find the cheapest price. Confused.com will point you in the direction of the most likely candidates, but when you phone them up, don't mention the online quote - as they have inherent assumptions which may not be to your benefit. Start a new one, go through all your details mentioning everything relevant, and then you might see lower premiums.

    Hope this helps

Cheers Dave, some great pointers there, I haven't even got my full licence yet, Ive had about 15 lessons and looking to get my licence this year (fingers crossed) It was online with Tesco so when it comes round to the crunch I will definitely give them a ring, any thoughts on this new scheme some insurers are adopting in which you can only drive up until a certain time at night ,then you have to pay per hour (or something like that). Once my licence is sorted I will look into taking my pass plus.

    Cheers
    Martin

just for the record....that's not a D Turbo.

It IS the same engine, body etc, but the model is a meridian

The reason i mention it is a DTurbo is a MODEL, not an engine. Its important for insurance purposes. A meridian is a seperate model, like an LX or a GLX.

In all cases the 1.9 turbo diesel is identical.

i just had to renew the insurance on the gti-6

    tips from me are..

always put your mum on there unless she has crashed of whatever recently.
Never say your using the car for driving to work.
always shop around you will find places that offer a guaranteed price match or beat by 10 %.

That quote is nothing short of abysmal, try elephant, bell, quinn are always cheap.

One thing to remember with the 306 is the cam belt needs doing alot more often than pug say.

on a happy note my renewal was 890 quid for the year

    19,2 years ncb

re howard: Quite. Any journey during the week and this is the first thing they'll check.

Always declare everything you can think of to insurers - they drop claims quicker than Nick would accept a date with Kiera Knightley.

edit: and lying to insurance is even more stupid, possibly illegal.

Especially when you post it on a public forum

If you are using your car for more than social , domestic , pleasure and commuting then you NEED to tell your insurers. If they can get out of paying a claim then they will.

I've never got any of my premiums loaded for adding commuting - its only when you use the car for work ( visiting clients , carrying samples etc. ) that they start to hike the price up a little.

never had a problem with it, my dad actually recommended i say that, he has claimed before fine. As have numerous other people i know.

oh my boss aswell, i admit lying to them abut having a STD car and having bolted a turbo to it would get you no payout at all.

price difference for me was quite alot actually, oh well

just got the Scooby quote down to £479 (confused.com who used RAC insurance) by binning the courtesy car, reducing the annual mileage and generally being a necky ____... but not by telling porkies

you've lied twice though - about the mods and the use... are you nuts? insurance companies aren't stupid, and will wriggle out of a claim if they can..
